Remembrance Day is a Canadian holiday, but I think every day is a good day to remember those we lost.

The soldier that lies here could be American, he could be Canadian, British, French or First Nation - all fought where he lies. Who he was is less important than the fact that we honor him today.

Here's my Veterans Day profile photo, right around Christmastime of 1990, in Doha Qatar and only a few weeks before the start of the Gulf War.

I'm sitting on the wing of F-16C 87-0228. Sadly, 228 only had a few weeks left as well - shot down by an Iraqi SAM over Baghdad on 19 Jan 1991.

36 years ago tonight, the world changed. As an American then serving in Europe, I'll never forget that night.

Sometimes it seems like yesterday I walked into the pub near Madrid on a November evening in 1989 and asked, "What's that going on on TV?"

Everyone just pointed and said, "Berlin".

This week we were discussing the fact that poppies have mostly disappeared here in the US, I hadn't seen one in at least 20 years. Well, today, going into the grocery, the VFW was distributing Buddy Poppies. Here's mine, along with a Royal Canadian Legion poppy, and an Indigenous Veteran poppy.

While poppies being a symbol of remembrance was inspired by #Canadian Army surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae and his poem "In Flanders Fields" in 1915, the actual practice of wearing poppies began in the United States with Moina Michael just after WWI.

These photos, well, they're mine, from a cold winter's day after my Dad passed away.

I may not be Canadian, but I remember. Je me souviens.

Today is a good day to remember. Next Tuesday on the 11th? Even better.

Each year for our Veterans Day commemoration at work I bring in some "stuff" for my desk. While I'm a Veteran, I lean more towards the Remembrance Day end of the holiday even though it's no longer "official" here in the US. What I did is insignificant compared to the sacrifice of those we lost.

Sadly, it appears that after nearly 20 years, we're losing our local team. Next season would have been the anniversary. @northcarolinafc.bsky.social

Before I joined the USAF, I'd spent more time on Canadian bases than American. Here's a patch from CFB Trenton from the early 1980's. Should be a CC-130 Hercules, a CC-137 the "Big Boeing", a CH-135 Twin Huey and a CC-115 Buffalo. I was pretty much destined to be a maintainer.

85 years ago today the Battle of Britain was won and Germany was on it's way to defeat in the Second World War. Once Britain was secured from invasion, Germany couldn't win, and the Allies wouldn't lose - it was all just a matter of time.

And that happened a full year before the US entered the war.

The #BirdOfTheDay is the #Heron, and since it's a cool, dark and rainy afternoon here in #NorthCarolina, here's a look back at a sunny summer sunset and a Great Blue Heron.

I'm still honored that 8 years ago, in the 150th Anniversary of the Canadian Confederation and the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, my photo was chosen by the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa for display at their "Vimy - Beyond the Battle" exhibition.

Especially since I'm not Canadian...

Rest in peace to Dr. Tim Cook, the Chief Historian at the Canadian War Museum. History is about telling stories and saving those stories for future generations, Dr. Cook was an incredible storyteller, and his legacy will live on through the history that he collected and the stories it tells.

Mt. Mitchell, in #NorthCarolina is the highest point in North America east of the Rockies.

6C/44F at the top this afternoon, and right at freezing with the wind chill. Of course I was wearing shorts (but did put on a fleece pullover.)

I've been proudly fighting fascists for almost 40 years and I was proud to continue that today.

No Kings and No Tyrants, and no Canadian 51st state, ever.

That's my Canada Army Run for 2025.

I'm proud to have taken part in the Army Run this year supporting and raising funds for my Canadian Military and Veteran friends. Hope I made you proud.

This old, and slow long-ago American Sergeant, I'll stand on guard for thee. 🍁

They ordered a new Vernier caliper at work, not sure they appreciated just what 80" / 2040mm of caliper looks like. It's just short of the ceiling.

Of course I had to take a picture with it....

One year ago this morning, 850 miles / 1400 km north into my #CanadaDay weekend trip. If I could be there right now again, I would.
