The #nytimes is a newspaper that has successfully made the financial transition to the Internet, from advertising to digital subscriptions.

I hope more #newspapers and #magazines have the same success: societies need journalism, ideally from competing sources.
Stacked bar charts of the revenue of the *New York Times* from 2003 to 2022, with different colours for print copies/subscriptions, digital subscriptions, advertising and other. Revenue was about $2B in 2022, mostly advertising. Revenue fell to about $1.6B in 2008, but began rising after around 10 years, reaching $2.2B in 2022. Advertising was initially the largest source of revenue, but has fallen from $1.2B to $0.6B; digital subscriptions (and the paywall) started in 2011 and have grown to $0.9B. Print copies/subscriptions have declined slightly over the period of the chart. (Figures in alt-text are approximate.)
