Psychology is fragmented into the study of a myriad of constructs and measures, most of which are used very rarely. This hinders cumulative knowledge generation. We call on the field to defragment psychology and prevent further fragmentation. We provide four key recommendations to achieve this and summarize the needed actions. Psychological science consists of research on a myriad of constructs and measures. Research shows that tens of thousands of distinct constructs and measures have been proposed and many new ones are introduced each year, yet most (79%) are not reused more than twice1,2. Many measures are of unknown quality and are created ad hoc for the purposes of conducting substantive research, and little work is done to first establish validity. Psychological science is especially affected because our constructs are often nouns taken from everyday language, which tends to change over time; new nouns are introduced into language, providing new constructs to be measured. We now have a deeply problematic, fragmented literature (Fig. 1; see Box 1 for glossary): there are confusing redundancies, so that constructs with different names have measures that cannot be empirically distinguished from one another (for example, ref. 3); and a lack of standardization with discrepancies that make the literature incomprehensible, such as when different measures of the same construct correlate very weakly, if at all, with each other (for example, ref. 4). Such fragmentation limits our ability to generate cumulative knowledge. ...
