October, and January-October, global total estimated fire emissions were amongst lowest values of past 23 years despite some large-scale regional #wildfires, driven by the average emissions from tropical Africa. #CopernicusAtmosphere GFAS data based on MODIS🛰️ active fire obs.

I'm very pleased on behalf of co-authors to be able to share this, just published, paper summarizing the @bburnedscience.bsky.social Fire Emissions Workshop in Nov 2023. MODIS has been critical to fire emission estimation for the past two decades & the paper reviews 9 widely used emissions datasets.

August 2025 was an active month for #SaharanDust over the Atlantic with several plumes reaching the Antilles, Caribbean & beyond with high PM10 surface concentrations shown in #CopernicusAtmosphere analyses ads.atmosphere.copernicus.eu/datasets/cam... @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social @ecmwf.int

The 2025 year-to-date (to 7 August) total estimated #wildfire emissions for Canada (225 megatonnes of carbon (Mt C)), have overtaken 2024's annual total (223 Mt C) to be 2nd highest year since 2003, behind 2023. The total is likely to keep rising with 3 more weeks of summer still to come.

Based on #CopernicusAtmosphere GFAS data, this fire resulted in the highest annual total estimated fire emissions for Cyprus since at least 2003. Figure below for Greece, Turkey & Crprus to end of July from atmosphere.copernicus.eu/cams-tracks-...
