Continuing the #space theme: astronomer Nina Subbotina, one of Russia's first female astronomers, ran her own observatory near Mozhaisk. While no celestial object bears her name, both she and O. Fedchenko were remarkable scientists who brought fame to the #Mozhaysk region. #WomenInScience

While no asteroids bear the names of #Mozhaysk natives, one honors the Fedchenko family of scientists, including Olga Fedchenko. She lived and worked in the Mozhaysk region, creating its first local herbarium. Asteroid (3195) Fedchenko is named for her family.

No space objects are named after Mozhaysk, but there is an asteroid #Borodino. This 9-km-wide rock in the main belt orbits the Sun every 3.8 years. It's named for the site of the famous Battle of Borodino. (And asteroid "Mozhaiskij" honors an aviation pioneer, not the town).

In 1907, church historian Nikolai Skvortsov published a book with 64 rural churches of the Mozhaysk district — both active and already lost. He was killed in a robbery in 1917.

Almost a century later, in 1999, priest from the same region Boris Ponomaryov was also murdered during a home invasion.

A few days ago, we scanned two old postcards from 1914 — original paper prints.

They show a Klementiesky military polygon near Mozhaysk, Russia. And on one — a bridge that turned out to be... self-supporting.

Yes, like the design made by Leonardo da Vinci.
