Redhorse ID can be confusing, even for professionals, so I made these cheatsheets (in 2011!). They have since been used by state agencies, labs, and many anglers. PDF downloads aren't working on my site, so here they are as images. Share wherever it might be useful. #redhorse #nativefish #fishing

A few gar/cicada prints (4 or 5) left. If you're in IL/WI/MN/IA, in person delivery may be possible. $10 off for that, so $70. Here are a couple shots I've received from people who already got theirs framed. If you want one, message me. Don't use etsy if you want the discount. #gar #fishart #cicada

But they still get treated like carp. I watched a couple guys shooting spawning quillbacks with arrows. I asked what they were doing and they said "Killing carp!" They didn't like the info I then provided. When I came back later, there was a pile on shore. #25daysoffishmas

There's a reason photographers are always telling their subjects to "smile like a Bowfin!" and love poets can't stop writing "She had a smile like a bowfin." The happiest fish on earth for millions of years. #25daysoffishmas #bowfin #amia

So I guess my observations of flying gar were just part of a long, long trend. #garweek

Finally, we have the playful side of airborne gars: just a friendly game of leapfrog with a turtle. And you can have it in your own fish tank! From a magazine for kids, 1892. #garweek

But wait, there's more! 1856. New Orleans. Gar in the water tank on the roof. More flying gar. #garweek

And that's not all! In 1890 a cyclone in Indiana deposited a gar in a hotel's parlor. #garweek

This time it's raining gar scales somehow. 1872 #garweek

It's raining gars? Now that's my kind of biblical plague! (This 1894 drawing is actually those other "garfish" I wish weren't called that as it skews search results: family Belonidae, aka needlefish.) But that's not the only gar rain I've read about. Let me see if I can find the others... #garweek

White Bass swimming under a Lake Sturgeon (Wolf River, WI, May 2022). I also saw them doing the same thing under other large fish, including Bigmouth or Smallmouth Buffalo (don't remember which) and more sturgeons. (Recorded my screen while watching wolfrivercam.) #25DaysofFishmas

I missed Wednesday's #garweek puns and jokes day, so I'm going to turn my work in late and hope for partial credit. Starting with the GARMONICA!

My 2nd lake sturgeon (again, Wisconsin River) was a little bigger than the first, and a lot less serrated. Someone said it looked like I was about to rip into a wicked solo, and someone else made it happen. #25DaysofFishmas #sturgeon #acipenser

My firs sturgeon, a young lake sturgeon from the lower Wisconsin River, was basically a randomly firing muscle covered in knives. And beautiful.

Beware: sometimes shortnose gar put on snout spots so you’ll think they’re spotted gar and get excited about catching a species not known to be in the river. (LaSalle County IL, 2022) #garweek #25daysoffishmas

Took multiple trips to the river to get a shortnose gar while wearing my Garr’s Beer shirt, and then this was the best photo I could get. #GarWeek #25daysoffishmas
