Mount Fuji Garden

Retired and doing some gardening on the slopes of Mount Fuji - south facing, 325m. Some pictures from jogging or cycling nearby as well.
One day of rain - snow at high altitude - makes a big difference to Mount Fuji. Before and after pictures below, with a nice cloud formation as a bonus.

This plant is called “dragon’s beard” apparently. Rather attractive dark berries in December.

Another use for a futon - keep your drying daikon frost free.

This is the red momiji at the front of the house.

Gabrielle rose - quite difficult to grow apparently but blooming in December.

Our momiji is looking very good right now.

A great crop of Yuzu this year - this is only a small part of it

It’s the time of year when you start to dry the daikon on the hedge.

The snow is just beginning to appear on Mount Fuji and at the golden hour it can reflect the sunset.

This Tricyrtis hirta, or the toad lily (in Japanese, ホトトギス or 杜鵑草) - a native plant.

This haiku is spot on:

杜鵑草
もの言はぬまま
秋の暮れ

Hototogisu
mono iwanu mama
aki no kure

“The toad lily
says nothing
autumn evening falls.”

An unusual cloud pattern around Mount Fuji today.

Yet more pictures of persimmons…

A view of Mount Fuji from a few weeks ago with “soba” or buckwheat plants in the foreground.
November 1, 2025 at 1:37 AM
We found an empty “semi” or cicada moult hanging on the underside of the leaf.

The lemons are still doing well, although they are not that lemon, colour wise.

The view southwest.

After quite a few cloudy days at last we have had a few decent sunsets.

This rose was growing complete wild not far from the house. I would have thought it was late to see a rose like this.

The leaves on our maple tree are just beginning to turn red - later than normal I think.

We found a ‘suzumebachi’ on the lawn - the famously aggressive Asian hornet. It looked weakened so hopefully there isn’t a nest nearby!

Apparently this is a wild persimmon tree. The fruit are tiny compared with the cultivars used for the fruit.

We came across three pheasants in the harvested rice field today taking the dog out - just visible in the picture. A parent and two children perhaps?
