After more than 20 years of programming, I saw today for the first time a filename with a NON BREAKABLE SPACE in it. Like… what were you even doing, my predecessor!

An evening before launch. Four hours and my nerves lost.

The names in Arabic are encoded as images, as there’s no support for right-to-left text on Playdate.

These images are paired to the data tables and there’s also 62 of them. Each is about 250kB in size (about half when encoded into Playdate’s super minimalist black and white pdi format).

A single table like this would still crash Playdate upon loading the data. I still needed to split the table into many smaller files. In the end there’s 62 of them, each with 1000 people. (The data is saved as code instead of loading it from a data file such as csv.)

And what about these images?

Compared to a computer, Playdate is slow. Any data you work with needs to be as small as possible.

I converted all data, including names, into numbers. Data then look like on the picture — age, year/month/day of birth, gender, and several numbers that encode the name (1 = Rafat, 2 = Amir, etc)

My motivation: Statistics are useful for many things, however sometimes it’s important _not to zoom out_ and to stay with one name at a time. Instead of comparing this list with other lists, to look closely at each item in the list.

The interaction of turning the crank feels very powerful to me.

me thinking of relaxing: packing my playdate, switch, kindle, phone, two books _and_ a magazine into my backpack

me actually relaxing: filling in sky blue while my kid is coloring in the rest of the sheet

AI overview just told me that the best way to find the thing I’m looking for is to enter it into a web search engine and check the results. I can’t even. (Pic shows my original search in Czech, the translation is in ALT.)

The sixth volume of Lock On from @lostincult.co.uk just landed on my desk and what an absurdly magnificent achievement! I love this.

The issue is that this is not at all easy to fix — this is how the LLM tech works. They can add tons of safeguards but they cannot change the nature of the probabilistic text generation. The bias will leak out in new ways.
