i only watched death note once as a teen and a lot of my memories are fuzzy at best but i'm sure i had thoughts at the time that i was then incapable of processing then but can now recognise as "this guy is really moe though"

i've legit basically talked myself out of getting the kit in spite of quite liking the design entirely because of those stickers, it's not great. it's not even done in a way where there's like, a raised or recessed detail for them that you can just paint either the stickers are ALL you get

yeah even from the movie alone having seen the new character design and going 🤨 beforehand he did stick out as like, having obvious juice so that's good to hear

the obviously nostalgia baiting alt history stuff was Fun Enough but the setup with the new characters and challia but he's an actual character this time is what had my attention properly

like with things as they were there was groundwork for using the old stuff as a springboard for some sort of neat lower stakes story set in a single colony and mostly using the classic stuff as a springboard like you might expect given the setup and the short runtime

i guess the biggest thing is that i was kinda hoping it'd focus more on the original stuff and to not y'know, disappear up its own arse with the staff's highly particular takes on legacy characters

like, one way or another i probably will still find stuff of value there but there are simply mental hurdles that must be crossed first to at least try give it a fair shake

reminding me that i really oughta actually get around to watching the rest of the series past the movie one of these days but god if it's not hard to get past having been spoiled enough to be sure it's not actually gonna deliver on the stuff i actually really liked about that opening stretch

It definitely feels like IBO actively Chose to lean into those vibes and aesthetics, it even comes across in the soundtrack not exactly being very sci-fi sounding and the fights tending to emphasise a lot of physical melee stuff

I do think it's interesting to see in something as modern as IBO too, with older anime some of the idiosyncracies in sci-fi can kinda just be explained with it reflecting tech of the time (people still using floppy discs in the space future and whatnot)

I know Akito has at least some fans but in spite of having heard that much I've never gotten any sense of what it's about or what happens in it which isn't the best of signs.

I know Akito has at least some fans but in spite of having heard that much I've never gotten any sense of what it's about or what happens in it which isn't the best of signs.

I've been giving the show a long overdue rewatch recently and think I might at least attempt to check out some of the other stuff when I'm done but also I'm unsure I should even bother to give it a chance

The ending of the original is the sort where it feels like you basically Can't actually follow up on it without undermining it to at least some extent so I've always been a little baffled seeing them try

I can remember being actually fairly interested to see where the show was going with Shaddiq in S1, mighta even said he was my favourite at the time and just like, y'know, yeah....

Mysteries written purely to be something that very much is still a mystery in setting that's outside the scope of the story actually being told feels like something i've seen a bunch of, it's kinda just a normal storytelling Thing

Like i guess from some perspectives it can't be as obvious as it feels to me or it'd not be a problem? But i kinda can't wrap my head around not just being immediately able to clock it for what it is

I've said so before but it really, truly is one of the most obvious "this is a thing that exists for worldbuilding and is literally never going to get a concrete explanation" sorts of things ever
