Even more finds from the Bell's Bend State Park #NationalMothWeek event! We hiked around in the dark and had uv, incandescent, LED, and mercury vapor bulbs in multiple spots around the outdoor center. Such an incredible night! ID's in the alt. #BugSky #Invertebrates 🪲 #moths

This is a Tulip-Tree Silkmoth (Callosamia anguilifera), it has dark brown caps on the top of the wing that change into lighter browns, oranges, and creams with white and black eyespots on the forewing and wing tips. A yellow moth perched on my finger. This is a Honey Locust Moth (Syssphinx bicolor). The forewings are yellow with tiny gray dots and spots. The hindwings fade from a dark, coral orange to yellow. A small, fuzzy moth perched on a white sheet in front of an LED light. This is a Pink Striped Oakworm moth (Anisota virginiensis). It has a fuzzy orange head with smooth wings that fade from burnt orange to a mauve-purple. It has two white dots near the top of the forewing. A small, very fluffy white moth perched on a white sheet in front of a mercury vapor bulb. This is a Dot-Lined White moth. It's head and abdomen are fuzzy and remind me of faux fur fabric. The wings are white with brighter white, reflective veins and black dots throughout.

A Virginia Creeper Sphinx moth (Darapsa myron) hanging from an oak leaf. It has differing shades of olive green along its wings and abdomen. A huge (five and a half inches long) Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar (Citherona regalis) hanging from a branch. It has large, orange horn shaped protrusions on its head and a bright green body with a yellow stripe along the side. This caterpillar turns into the Regal Moth. A large Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis) on the side of a tree. It has huge yellow wings that fade into a burnt orange color at the tips. A Spanish Moth (Xanthopastis regnatrix) crawling along the forest floor. It has an orange head and a black body with alternating white stripes and dots along its length.

For #InsectThursday and #BugSky, my favorite finds over the past few weeks. A grail moth, the Regal Moth found in a garden center, a Silver Long-jawed Orb Weaver, and a newly discovered flightless grasshopper (Melanoplus ingrami) that is only found in our Middle TN limestone cedar glades.

I've been trying to read more this year, so I took a bunch of old action figures to trade at McKay's here in Nashville and picked up oodles of field guides and naturalist journals. I grabbed this one randomly and turns out, the author is in Nashville! 10000% Recommended, a love letter, indeed.

Even more moth finds from our mini bioblitz in my backyard: eight spotted forester caterpillar, tragic goddess moth, a wild looking plume moth, and a tiny grass veneer (scientific names in alt) #TeamMoth #lepidoptera #BugSky #invertebrates 🪲
A caterpillar hanging onto a leaf. It's the larval stage of the Eight Spotted Forester Moth (Alypia octomaculata). This caterpillar has small stripes of black over a white body with orange colored segments and fine white hairs all over the body. A tiny moth on a green leaf with dusky brown wings that have iridescent blue, feathery ends. Along the wings are iridescent blue stripes that criss-cross. This is a Tragic Goddess moth (Strobesia proserpinella). A stick like, T shaped moth hanging from a green leaf. The wings are skinny and the legs are long and spindly with hair like protrusions along the joints. It's a rusty orange color with flecks of white throughout. This moth belongs to a complex of Himmelman's and Busk's Plume moths (Complex Geina tenuidactylus). A very small cream moth with brown patches and lacy patterns on the wing edge resting on a green leaf, triangle shaped. This moth is an Elegant Grass Veneer (Microcrambus elegans).
