Autism is not a disease, so "the framing of autistic characteristics and behaviours as ‘symptoms’ is misleading, harmful and helps nobody." Instead, others should strive to understand autistic experiences and proceed accordingly. From @fergus.oolong.co.uk:

I can’t blame parents of autistic kids, parents like me, for being pissed off in general, because our kids’ and families’ rights, supports, and services needs are rarely sufficiently addressed: We all feel disenfranchised, because we all are disenfranchised. 1/2
What I want most for my autistic son: Other people accepting him on his terms, and welcoming him into the community—so I can feel less anxious about his safety and well-being as he moves through the world now, and also in his future without us by his side.

"Our autistic children are doing their best to survive in schools. We need to move beyond the old mantras & myths around reasons-for-behaviour, and into a present & future where we understand deeply and work collaboratively." @annmemmott.bsky.social, at TPGA:

Today in hell yes, research!

Maybe non-autistic people are the ones who need social skills training, since they tend to instantly judge and dismiss autistic peers.

Feels like I'm just posting to the void since I'm just getting started here, but why not. I write a weekly newsletter, and this week I write about how far away from reading and critical thinking we’ve come. It's lacking in our education, COVID learning loss, social media attention spans, all of it.
We need to get back to reading and critical thinking
Because 2024 feels different from 2016.
