I want to be able to resign. If you like my Mad King story and want to see more, would you consider buying me a coffee or two occasionally? ❤️

I'm attempting to earn from other sources independent of my early morning gig, because quite frankly, the hours are killing me and that place doesn't give a shit if it runs me into an early grave.

Jesus Christ. I can't believe that this is reality. 🥺

I hate that we are in such a shitshow in this country. I hate that we have to be afraid to help someone, because who knows what repercussions could come back on us? All that I do know for certain is that I could not live with myself if I didn't at least try.

The only other place that I can think of that might be able to offer some assistance is the Salvation Army, or maybe a church. The language barrier notwithstanding, the fact that she cannot read or write makes it one hundred times more difficult.

We're a library, not social services - but the fact that it somehow registered with her that we were a good place to start makes me feel very proud to be in this profession. If I were her, though? I'd get as far away from McKean County as I could.

I told her that everyone there was a safe person and that we would do as much as we could possibly do within our capacity to help. Then, I went out to my car and I cried.

I'm hoping the Y sends someone to help. I don't know what else we can do.

That caseworker, in turn, told her that she needed to get her supervisor and that she would explain what was going on and call her right back.

I introduced myself to this girl and told her what my boss's name was as well.

Then suddenly she was at the desk again. My boss agreed to take it from there. She called the YWCA while I stood there with the girl, explaining to her what we were doing. My boss explained the situation and then was put through to another caseworker.

And that we needed to provide a safe space for her. He's from Oklahoma, and he has seen firsthand some of the things that have happened to undocumented individuals who have come to this country. It is much more widespread there than it is here.

We talked about it for a minute or two more, and then I got ready to leave. I explained everything to my co-worker who was working the desk so that he would be prepared if, by some miracle, she came back. He was 100% in agreement with me that calling the police was not the answer .

I had to ask her if she was here legally just about took me out. When my boss and I exited the office where we were talking, to my great dismay, she was gone. 😔

The idea that I might have frightened her because I had to talk to my boss, just really rocked me to my core.

She agreed that we could contact the YWCA for this girl and see if they might possibly be able to send somebody to come and get her, since she can't read the street signs and she doesn't know her way around town. Y'all...the fear in her eyes and the look on her face when

She was concerned that maybe this girl is in a trafficking situation, and that complicates things so much. We both also have to think about liability of the library and all of those stupid legal things that any entity has to think about. We're wading into very deep waters here.
