Lush treetops shade both sides of the residential street. Cars are parked along one side — orderly, tucked in for the night as their drivers are soon to be. Power lines reach from one side of the street to the other. The sky is powdered with clouds, remnants of a hot August day chased away by the beginnings of change. If the trees could be seen to move, it would be because of a cool breeze that seems to carry a word for us: finally. Still, hibiscus blooms enduringly, so it goes. From left to right, the shrub takes over the foreground of the frame just as it dares to overtake the sidewalk below. One blossom is central, almost triumphant — white petals reach out from a ruby centre, open to the camera, ivory stamen gazing into the beyond. A shrub blooms prolifically, but each blossom has little more than a day. Holding onto its moment, the central flower’s salience is challenged only by rays of light from a streetlamp on the opposite side of the street that defy distance to come across the lens ahead of nearer objects. Neighbouring blossoms appear weathered, and nearby buds await their time in the spotlight. Hibiscus blooms through September. And so it goes.
