A MERRY LITTLE EX-MAS kicks-off Netflix‘s holiday “Hallmark movie” season; and while it’s nice to see Alicia Silverstone back on the screen, there’s far too few memorable moments along the way. While it plays-into its cheesiness and charm, it does so with little payoff sadly

ETERNITY is a cute and funny romantic dramedy about the afterlife and the choices we make. The film examines a challenging predicament, surrounded by intriguing world building and strong cast (Olsen/Teller/Turner are solid, but Da’Vine is the MVP!); though its pacing is uneven and holds it back

Chloé Zhao’s HAMNET is heartbreaking and absolutely devastating; it’s beautifully-crafted, but also an extremely difficult watch. Jessie Buckley’s performance penetrates your soul and shatters you into a million pieces, alongside an excellent Paul Mescal as a broken Shakespeare

JAY KELLY is a sharply-written, beautiful, and introspective look at life in the movie business. A brilliant, captivating cast (Clooney, Sandler, Dern) provides such a grounded, entertaining narrative that can truly apply to anyone; one of the best and most charming films of the year

THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE is vibrant, expressionistic and bold; an impeccably-crafted and acted film about religion and its interpretation. Amanda Seyfried is astonishing, completely disappearing into the character and fully embodying the Shaker culture. One of the year’s finest

THE PLAGUE is a harsh reminder of the pain of adolescence, how cruel it can be, and the toll it takes; a PSA against bullying set a a water polo summer camp in the early 2000s. Joel Edgerton is great, but it’s the kids (led by Everett Blunck) that really cements its authenticity

IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT builds suspense in such a masterful way, you’ll be hanging on every moment for what happens next. Jafar Panahi’s film is darkly comedic, but shines a spotlight on real-life horrors and his own personal experiences and feelings; a beautiful and brave film

DEATH BY LIGHTNING tells the story of James Garfield’s rise to the Presidency and his ultimate fate. A very intriguing history lesson told through a modernized lens, featuring memorable work from Michael Shannon, Nick Offerman, Matthew Macfadyen, Betty Gilpin, Bradley Whitford, and Shea Whigham

LATE SHIFT highlights Switzerland’s increasing nurse shortage crisis and features an astonishing Leonie Benesch performance, beautifully-capturing the spirit of healthcare workers in both its pacing and raw emotion; required viewing for anyone who has ever criticized patient care
