Just to put the federal debt into perspective: 36 trillion dollars amounts to $106,000 for each US citizen! It’s unreal to me to hear both democrats and republicans talking about the debt as irrelevant

Couldn't agree more! Yet, we must also not fall into the common trap of emphasizing that the Humanities don't have to lead to jobs but only to personal growth and fulfillment. For millions of poor American families such an attitude is the privilege of the rich (!) middle class.
