"But without Hume, people panicked, even normally good people. In the first year it was every person for themselves, or every family for their family. Later, after some violent conflicts, things settled down. People started helping each other again.” #douglaslives #postapocalypse #newadult

"If the Fog had leveled lower than Hume, I think the community would have become the center of that area, and probably would have been a good place to live. But without Hume, people panicked, even normally good people. In the first year it was every person for themselves." #douglaslives #newadult

“Susanna, what was Hume like when the Fog came?” Jean asked.
“I don’t remember much, because I was only eleven and living to the north a few miles away. At first, those of us higher up didn’t know what had happened; there were simply reports that Hume had been covered. #douglaslives #postapocalypse

Susanna shook her head and gave a wry smile. “That certainly sounds like Douglas.”
Yuie’s expression changed to one of caution. “You know he’s prone to trouble.”
“Oh, yes. I’m aware.”
“Susanna, what was Hume like when the Fog came?” Jean asked.

“It was when we were gathering firewood. There was no one else around, and he asked if he could kiss me. I thought about it and said, ‘sure,’ so we spent about ten minutes kissing. We stopped when I told him, ‘No, you cannot feel my breasts’.” #douglaslives

. “Pete and the most popular guys were older, but Douglas was intriguing even at thirteen.”
“Ever make out with him?” Jean asked
“I made out with him, once,” Yuie confessed.
“You did not!”

The young women were eager to learn more about Petal and her, and they were especially interested in how her relationship with Douglas developed.
“He was always interested in girls, and we were interested in him,” Yuie said as they hung her laundry on a line. #douglaslives #postapocalypse #newadult

Petal practically disappeared for the next two days, spending all her time with Jenny, Howard and Jean’s oldest daughter. When Captain Kennedy met with Douglas to discuss conditions in the northern parts of the Sierra Mountains, Susanna spent time helping and speaking with Yuie and Jean. #newadult

Susanna was thankful for the king size bed, for he was sleeping sans clothing, and she did not dare to touch him. She continued to lay by his side at night, and to her surprise he did not press her for intimacy. Temptation from desire resulted in restless sleep for both, but they remained chaste.

As for Douglas, he was uneasy; she knew him well enough by now to perceive his frame of mind. Although outwardly open to the people he remembered, inside he held himself apart. The teenagers were eager to make or renew his acquaintance. The young adults were friendly, though reserved. #douglaslives

Civilization had returned to this area. Not the technology—that would reappear eventually—but a day-to-day expectation of community peace, of order, and she sensed that in this community peace was taken for granted. Their intention to shelter Susanna and Petal seemed also to be taken for granted.

Susanna was bewildered at times by the conversations she overheard. There was a vibrancy to the dialogue, and a confidence she could not recall hearing in her lifetime. These people were not afraid of strangers entering their midst, though they were cautious. #douglaslives #postapocalypse #newadult

The next morning Douglas and Susanna rolled out of bed, and rubbing their eyes they exited the building, only to be met by cloud cover.
“We should have slept in,” he said.
“That would have been wise.”

Petal let out a moan. “We have to get up early just to see some old stars?”
“Hey, this only happens once a year.”
“So what? You told me if we wait long enough, we can see any constellation in the evening.”
“Fine. Sleep in. Susanna and I will see the stars.”
“Thank you.”

“Okay, change of subject. Tomorrow morning we’re getting up before five.”
“Why? Are we going someplace? We’re not leaving yet, are we?”
“No. Scorpio’s head can be seen at about five in the morning.”

She wiped her tears. “Okay. Does that mean you won’t discipline me?”
“You wish. I won’t smack your butt, but Susanna might.”
“I know. I love you.”
“I love you, and you’re my kid now. Got it?”
“Got it.”

“I love you, Douglas, but I can’t call you ‘Dad,’ and I can’t call Susanna ‘Mom’.” Her voice choked.
“Hey.” Alarmed, he knelt and folded her in his arms. “I get it. We’re your parents, not your Dad and Mom. Parents are the people you can always count on. You call us by our names, same as always.”
December 2, 2025 at 9:45 PM
“I’ve been meaning to speak to you about that. Susanna and I talked it over. If it’s okay with you, we’ll be your parents for now on. At least one of us will always be near.”
Petal didn’t speak at first, and her eyes filled with tears. #douglaslives

“Douglas.”
“Petal. Where have you been?”
“Looking around. Douglas, I heard what you said to Uncle Howard.”
Douglas winced. “Explain.”
“About you sort of being my parent.”

“By the way, where is Major Collins?”
Yuie’s face clouded. “He’s General Collins now, and he lives in Petersburg, because he had a stroke and is still recovering. Oh, and Mrs. Peabridge died of diabetes.”
“Well, shit.”
“Yeah.”

“You and Lincoln still have those loud arguments.”
She blushed. “Once in a while.”
He laughed. “I’ll never forget how horny you guys were, even when you were screaming at each other.”
“Douglas!”
“Anyway, congratulations on being pregnant.”
“Thanks.”

“It’s an easy walk from Lake Luis to the Farm. Only takes a couple of days.”
Yuie threw a glance at his prosthetic.
“Okay, maybe three days.”
“You’re welcome to wait here. You know that.”
“Thanks. How’s married life?”
“Good. We’re happy. As you can see, I’m expecting.”

“Yes, but the bus is traveling east this Friday, taking Howard and Jean home.”
“Can it let us off at the Great Highway? We could walk to Lake Luis.”
“Yes, I’m sure they’ll accommodate you. But for now, you need to rest, especially if you intend to walk the rest of the way.”

“It makes a run every Friday, stopping at Davis Brown Farm, Lake Luis, Eagle’s Retreat, and then continuing on to East Post. That’s how Howard and Jean got here. It makes the reverse trip the following Friday.”
“What day of the week is it?” Douglas asked.
“This is Wednesday.”
“So, two more days.”
