Reading (still) “Waging Nonviolent Struggle” and came across this section, ‘Openness and secrecy in nonviolent struggle.’ Some good points here
Openness and secrecy in nonviolent struggle Secrecy, deception, and underground conspiracy pose difficult problems for a movement using nonviolent struggle. If operating under a political dictatorship, secrecy will be required at times. Elsewhere, secrecy can pose a serious danger. Arguments are often made in favor of secrecy in nonviolent struggles in order to surprise the opponents and to catch them unprepared to counter the resistance actions. This is of dubious validity. First, there is a long and successful use of spies and informers within resistance organizations. Also, modern communications technology makes secrecy very difficult to maintain. Second, advance knowledge by the opponents of planned demon-strations, for example, will give the opponents time to consider how to respond. This may reduce the chances of massive brutali- ries and killings by police and troops who have not received specific instructions on how to act. … An additional danger of practicing secrecy is the reason for its use. Secrecy is often used out of fear, and therefore contributes to fear-which must be abandoned or controlled for nonviolent struggle to operate effectively. The following discussion assumes that the struggle is occurring within a political system that permits significant civil liberties. Where this is not the case, careful attention is required to determine what knowledge and activities should be secret or revealed. Nonviolent struggle is based on bravery and discipline. Openness-that is, being truthful with the opponents and the public concerning intentions and plans-may be a corollary of the requirements of fearlessness and nonviolent discipline. Openness leads to liberation from the fear of arrest, disclosure of secrets, break up of resistance organizations, and imprisonment. A mass movement needs to be open. Masses of people cannot participate in a secret resistance movement because secrecy demands that knowledge of plans be held by only a trusted few. Additionally, nonviolent discipline is best achieved in the light of day rather than clandestinely. Secrecy contributes to a smaller movement and can lead to a resort to violence within the resistance movement in order to silence persons suspected of revealing secrets to the opponents. Secrecy also contributes to paranoia within the movement, a paranoia that tends to increase over time. It often leads to disastrous consequences when internal differences surface under the guise of alleged violations of secrecy. Perhaps one faction may accuse the leader of another faction of being a spy. A paranoid movement cannot function effectively as a resistance movement. In the struggle to attain freedom, it is necessary to behave like free people.

Morning hike - Hawk family at 1 mile was getting fed (I think) on my way up, having flying lessons when I saw them again on the way down. Another young hawk awkwardly crossing my path ❤️ with noisy encouragement.

The hawk at 2 miles was back in his tree, awaiting unwary 🐇 I guess.

as a counter to everything dismaying, maybe I should dwell more on what I love

There are two sets of fledgling hawks on my ritual-hike. They are awkward and floofy and I love them. This one flapped across the trail then sat watching me. I expect they will soon explore further away.
A hawk (red shouldered? red tailed?) on a branch among greenery close beside a trail. Just prior to this, it flapped across the trail a few feet in front of me, gained this branch and then sat there while I walked past & stopped to take photos. July 22 A hawk (likely same one) high in a dead tree beside the trail, watching me go by. July 29 It's hanging out in same area that I saw it a week ago and a few days ago, as is the other set of hawks a mile away.

Made these delicious things last week to cheer myself up. (And bring to dinner.) Meringue layers with very rich choc frosting. Might need to make more 😋
Several mini meringue and chocolate cakes - 2 layers each, frosting between and on top, not sides. Individual sized - could easily eat 2. And some just one layer, because A bunch of meringue cookies made with 2 meringue flats stuck together with a chocolate frosting middle

Black and white cat in a round black and white cat bed, but all you can see is his head, neck and one paw because his very large tabby sister is lying on top of him and the bed, despite not fitting into it AT ALL. Tabby has a small bit of pink tongue showing. No one is upset, they stayed this way for hours even though it doesn't look comfortable.

Latest estimate: -2.8 percent — March 03, 2025 The GDPNow model estimate for real GDP growth (seasonally adjusted annual rate) in the first quarter of 2025 is -2.8 percent on March 3, down from -1.5 percent on February 28. After this morning's releases from the US Census Bureau and the Institute for Supply Management, the nowcast of first-quarter real personal consumption expenditures growth and real private fixed investment growth fell from 1.3 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively, to 0.0 percent and 0.1 percent. Bobcat supervision of the trail today!

#Morningwalk today, saw this one cross ahead of me so I was looking for it. Of course I found it in the most cat place available - top of a sunny rock with a good view.
Rocky outcropping on side of trail, scrub chaparral around it, bobcat sitting at the top keeping an eye on me. Shortly after this we both heard more hikers approaching and he hid in the brush. But! Saw him (or another similar size) later on hike when coming down.
