Trump never officially ran for 2012. He played footsie with it, fielding a private poll in New Hampshire in Oct 2010, going to CPAC in Feb 2011, but never truly entered. He publicly declared he wouldn't go for it when NBC forced him to make a decision about the future of The Apprentice in May 2011.

They're in the position now where even what should be good ideas in theory are going to go down like a lead balloon. Like, why should pensioners pay way less tax on their taxable income than everyone else? But you didn't raise it as a possibility in the manifesto, so you should expect blowback.
