I've been wanting to try making pizzelles over the last few weeks, and tonight I finally found the energy to just try a batch after dinner.

This was fun, and apparently I'm encouraged enough to sign up for my department's cookie fest next month. Gulp...

Who looks at a collection of three subplots, in an image like this, and talks about "that axes in the middle" or "look at these three axes"?

How? Why? This is a too-clever-by-half naming convention that trips up users new to the ecosystem. Eventually I'll get used to it, I guess. But why?

How many times did we see this pattern of play tonight? All ten Revolution players are within 25 yards of their own end line, we have the ball wider than all of them, and there are 4-5 players between the ball and the near post.

It's a shame the carousel on their website doesn't show the view out of the other corner of the field, though - but seriously, this backdrop for a game is phenomenal.

I'd love to know how this system is calibrated, because I'm very very surprised that from this camera angle, that line is parallel to the end line with that much slope. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. But it's surprising.

This offside ruling in Toluca - #Crew96 makes no sense. Why drop a line to account for body lean by the attacker, but not for the defender?

The result benefits Columbus, but if this is the standard it's only a matter of time before the broken process penalizes them.

A bit more tweaking, and this is the result. Added color coding for which league the nation participated in, and the size of the text showing promotions and relegations gets smaller. The lines delineating each tournament also make more sense now.

Feedback is welcome - there's room for improvement.

Following up on my earlier efforts at an infographic about the CONCACAF Gold Cup, I'm now turning my attention to the Nations League. Here's a snippet of the prototype.

A thorough description is in the alt text, but the summary is that this is prototype, and more work is needed.

Something else I got done this weekend which helped with *waves at the news*...

Recipe is "Best Fudge Brownies (with Crackly Tops)" - bakerbynature.com/the-best-coc...

I probably over mixed the batter, but these are still worth making again.

Further refinements:
- Adding a title and a legend
- Adding darker eye guides every third row and column to assist legibility when scanning
- Adding a slight border around each cell (in part because of the guides mentioned above)

Redesigning the visualization of #GoldCup participation, trying to make things a little prettier. There are still parts of this design that I'm not happy about, but I think it's better.

One thing I like is the focus on simply showing the results, and not including counts like the earlier version.

In soccer, we have the Gold Cup - which I've visualized in the past (here's the summary of all editions through 2023).

It wouldn't take much to update this for the 2025 edition, but I've also wanted for a while to try and come up with more polished visuals for this sort of work.

People talk about 2-0 being the most dangerous lead in soccer, but the second most dangerous is this - being up 70+% in possession.

Having some fun tonight working with #F1 telemetry data, specifically the fastest laps from qualifying for each of the races in the 2024 season. The box plot shows each of the 24 races from that season, sorted by the mean speed for each lap.

This place continues to be amazing to me, even as it starts to recede into our collective memories.

I've stopped going to official MLS platforms because I'm required to have a login to even load their app, and the information I need is found faster elsewhere. Tonight I tried again, checking what the lineup is for tonight.

The template on the left was all I saw for about 30 seconds, then oof.

This was a fun game to play at halftime. 🎉 #Crew96 #MiniCupg.co/kgs/SvNJ9Fk

I've been playing with some F1 data in Jupyter notebooks this weekend, using the FastF1 library and data store.

One thing I find fascinating is how a plot of drivers' lap times across a race - ordered by average lap time - can be so out of sync with the actual finishing order on track.

This sequence was an immediate yellow card.

I don't believe claims of bias, and I want to believe that VAR exists for a good reason. But what is the difference between these two plays? One is a booking and a direct kick. The other is not only not called, but not reviewed.

Hey @andrew-wiebe.bsky.social - here's a request for Instant Replay. #Crew96 - Miami, 57th minute. No foul, no review. Lujan is eventually booked much later for essentially the same foul.

Please help me understand what's going on here?

This is a new one for me. The air temperature is 30 degrees (19 wind chill), and they are spraying water liberally at halftime. Is this normal? Does the Crew do this?

Time for some live soccer again. Let's go #crew96

I was glad to get a chance to practice my data analysis and visualization skills a bit over the last few days, inspired by a post on the MLS subreddit. The result is this - a series of plots and code showing how teams across MLS have performed year-over-year: github.com/matt-bernhar...

Happiness is a warm cat that walks over to your lap and curls up for a nap voluntarily.

Sorry, my productivity for the day has been compromised, and I will not be moving until the cat leaves.
