Thank you to Texas A&M’s plant pathology department for inviting me to give a seminar. I had a great visit!!

Unfortunately I only took pictures of the rogue sheep statues in the hotel 🤣

Guess this is what happens when you are becoming the resident campus mycologist?

Something surreal about seeing scientific consensus on vaccines and climate change being ignored, grants being rescinded, higher ed threatened, etc.

Every post recently at NSF is about AI.

No need to think and discover. The computer can do it for you.

Where is the human aspect of innovation?

I am proud of my #NewPI activity this summer so I want to #humblebrag about a little.

Many of my students had results, but weren't making graphs and writing like they needed to 📊.

So, at the beginning of the summer, I issued a Publishable Pieces challenge: 10 PPs for lab 🍨 outing.

They did it!

Ok one last post from #PlantHealth2025 is to kudos @plantdisease.bsky.social for the the nonalcoholic options at the bars.

There were also fun iced teas and mocktails (not pictured) at the opening and closing receptions!

Aloha #PlantHealth2025! Mahalo for the fun times, lovely stories, good questions, cool ideas, and tropical vibes.

#PlantHealth2026 will be in Rhode Island - hopefully we will have more folks on the skyline by then!!

Alexi Dong brings the energy to her Melhus symposium talk on the last day of #PlantHealth2025! 🦸🦹

This comic-book style talk on peanut leaf spot is a delightfully fun take on classic plant pathology concepts. 🥜

What can change the battle of fungicide versus pathogen? Resistance loci!

Idea Cafe at #PlantHealth2025 - how do we describe microbial dynamics beyond pathogens?

Dysbiosis, pathobiome, etc.

Rethinking terms to accurately capture what we are observing during microbial interactions contributing to plant disease. 🌱🦠

Daniel Maddock (@michhulin.bsky.social’s group) investigates prophage carrying a key effector protein that enables Pseudomonas bacteria to infect cherry trees.

Deleting the whole prophage reduces virulence of the bacterium on the plant (leaf and woody tissue) 🍒

Jennifer Wilson starts her Face of the Future talk looking back at the history of the corn and soybean virus lab that she now co-runs at the USDA ARS in Ohio.

A wonderful highlight of the critical work done by long standing ARS labs to help local problems faced by farmers. 🌽🧑‍🌾🌱

Diel Donne Velasco points out the risk to barley caused by Xanthomonas translucens within US.

Field surveys show that a single field can have Xtt strains with different virulence patterns.

Maria Purnamasari introduces an oomycete causing root rot in peas. Can beneficial bacteria be used for control?

To do so, we need to test ways that microbes are communicating/contacting.

Joanna Kud calls attention to nematode effectors, often overlooked in the plant-microbe community.

A ubiquitin ligase effector from Globodera suppresses plant immunity, but also impacts stability of other nematode proteins encoded in its genomic neighborhood.

First talk of the day in the Gram positive bacteria special session!

Chang-Sik Oh dives into Clavibacter, pointing out that two plasmids in C. michiganensis carry virulence contributors. What about in other strains?

Plasmid composition differs across 88 isolates - 10 groups.
