This is a fantastic PhD scholarship opportunity, working on psychosocial support for people with intersex variations (innate variations of sex characteristics/differences of sex development) with a great team at UniSQ and the MRFF Interconnect Health project

Happy intersex awareness day!

Come and do a PhD on bioethics and the health of people with innate variations of sex characteristics (intersex variations/differences of sex development), with me and my colleagues at the University of Sydney:

The American Journal of Bioethics has just published my open access commentary on sport:

“Is It Ever OK to Reclassify Someone Out of Their Birth-Observed Sex Without Personal Consent? How Do We Manage Competing Methods of Classifying Sex?”

Then on 30 August Middleton states that a question on "sex characteristics" enables intersex and transgender people to be counted

(gender identity is a subset of a question on innate variations)

Instead of informed, accurate reporting, we are getting journalists such as Karen Middleton here on 28 August in @guardianaustralia.bsky.social writing that gender is "including variations of sex characteristics"

(innate variations are a subset of a question on gender diversity)

Many clinical rationales for treatment used by biomedical clinicians are rejected by experts.

Unnecessary early interventions are harmful practices

Clinical research is low quality, with no standardised methodologies, and no consensus about indications and timing of treatment.

Clinical practices are still grounded in subjective (and often prejudicial) beliefs

Decision-making heuristics for early (and unnecessary) feminising or masculinising surgery can be seen in this statement, in a resource currently online and published by the World Health Organization - this trait is 'of interest' to World Athletics and anti-trans folks

Sex observation/assignment is a medicalised process

Here's what Australian and UK paediatric endocrinologists say about sex assignment of infants with diagnosed variations/dsds.

Note the use of subjective measures, including reference to "surgical options" (i.e. feminising/masculinising surgeries)
