..But my other recollection of the show (which I AM sure about) is that when first advertised, it had Matthews Southern Comfort as the support act instead of EJ. This was around the time their version of Woodstock was gaining traction, so I suspect them pulling out was in some way connected to that.

I was fortunate enough to attend the Fotheringay/Elton John gig that you discussed, and it went down very much as you described. I have a feeling (but can't be certain after all this time) that Fotheringay didn't even get called back for an encore. ..

Just listened to some of this episode. Andrew, I don't think the Elton John clip at around 36 mins is the song 'Saturday Sun'.
