"What makes you think I'm trying to do anything?" His head tilts and she can't help but think that the angle lines his lips up perfectly with hers. When his eyes flick down to watch her lick her lips, she wonders if he's thinking the same thing.

Leaning past where Poe sits between them, Rey's eyes try to catch on Rose's gift, but with all her hopping, she can't get more than a glimpse of it. It's something shiny and round, at least. Small enough to fit in her hand, but heavy enough to need both to hold it. Her shocked gasp is lost to Rose's laughter as she throws herself on her fiancé's lap, holding him as tightly as she's holding...

Maybe it's stupid, but he can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment when he looks over his list again. Every person on it-from his parents, to his neighbours, to his friends and coworkers-is crossed off. And not only
that, but each of the gifts listed next to their names has a satisfying line struck through the middle, too. It feels good to know he's on track for another great holiday season. All he has to do is wrap everything up and then he's golden.

Saluting himself for a job well done, he takes a sip from his whiskey before tucking the list away into his 'Christmas' file. That's when it catches his eye: the little star he'd written next to one of the gifts for his mother.

The smile that covers his face is nothing short of giddy. Oh, he remembers this one.
Couldn't forget it even if he tried.

This particular scented candle had gone so viral, even he saw ads for it during his limited time online. Not wanting to get his mother something just for the sake of it though, he put a star beside it on his list; his reminder to test out the scent for himself before buying. It took some searching, but when he found it and gave it a sniff, he thought the candle stunk beyond belief. He almost put it back, too-until he realized it was the very last one in the entire store. Having been to a few other places, he knew it was probably his last chance to get his hands on it, but...it really did stink. Squirrelling it away to a place only someone as tall as he could get to was his assurance no one would snatch it before he made up his mind.

Imagine his surprise when he came back from looking around the mall to find a feral little kitten trying to get into his stash.

Seeing her face drop when she realized he didn't help her out of kindness made searching for the candle in the first place worth every irritating second. She was feisty, too; trying everything she could to get him to hand it over. Too bad he'd already made up his mind.

He's still laughing about it days later when he gets a call from Hux. "I need a favour. It's for Rose..."

Well, the candle really did stink, anyway.
He'd find his mother something else.

"And I keep telling you, that's fine. I'm excited to finally meet them." Her smile was meant to be comforting but it only made him teel worse.

"You're saying that because you don't actually know what they're like. Just what I've told you about them. And-I can say this now that you've agreed to marry me—I only shared the tamest stories." Her eyebrow rose at that but he went on. "I won't blame you if you want to stay at a hotel instead. In fact, I won't blame you if you decide to call the whole thing off-the visit, not the wedding; it's too late for that. We can hop back on a plane and be gone before they know—"

Her tinkling laugh had him shutting his mouth for what felt like the first time since
they boarded the plane this morning.
Relaxing in spite of the monumental disaster about to go down, he pulled her against his side, whispering one last assurance that they could leave at any time before guiding them both through the pick-up lanes outside.

The honks were the first thing they heard.
The embarrassing 'Welcome Home!' banner his parents somehow rigged to the top of their car greeted them next before the main event themselves popped their doors open and rushed out.

It was overwhelming and nerve-wracking and according to the security guard telling them off, against the rules.

The day was filled with what felt like endless introductions and then, of course, came the boisterous laughs and good-natured yelling.
It was even worse than he'd warned her it would be, and yet he watched his Rey throw herself into the fray as if she was always meant to be there in the first place.

"Ben, I don't know what you were talking about." Her cheeks were rosy thanks to the drink his father kept topping up, her shirt stained with what looked suspiciously like his mother's famous lasagna. "Your family is amazing!"

She got pulled away again, happy to join in the festivities, and looking at the joy on her face, he couldn't help but agree. His family was pretty amazing.

The day was...chaotic, to say the least. Fun, but chaotic.

Now, the house is quiet and still; his wife putting the kids put to bed, exhausted after burning off their sugar rush, and his parents resting in the guest room after he turned down their offer of help.

"I should've said yes." His mutter is equal parts dramatic and truthful. It looks like a damn tornado made of wrapping paper and ribbon tore through the living room. Peeking into the kitchen, he's pretty sure the pile of dishes in the sink is as tall as he is.

Grabbing a handful of cookies-brown sugar monstrosities he just can't stop eating—he gets to work.

It takes hours-and many, many more cookies-for him to finish. Finally done, he pauses in the hallway, noticing a beam of light coming from underneath the boys' door.

Looking inside has his heart swelling in his chest.

There, huddled together under the sheets is his entire world. Two little boys—a perfect mix of them both-snuggled up to their momma. All fast asleep; all perfect.

He's careful to keep his steps light as he makes his way over, first pressing kisses to his sons' foreheads, then doing the same to Rey. "Don't worry," he whispers, hands moving to her swollen belly, "I didn't forgot about you." Pressing a kiss there too, he closes the door behind him, a soft smile on his face as grabs an extra pillow and blanket and heads right back inside.

Which is why she didn't mind waiting in the endless line at the hardware store. Why she used up a considerable amount of her decorations budget on the brightest, most obnoxious lights she could get her grubby little hands on. Why, even after a double shift at the bar, she was up on a ladder humming along to a Christmas carol she'd heard on repeat all day.

Like always, if someone wanted to push her, it was her moral obligation to push right back. Even against annoying neighbours who took "bah humbug" to a whole new level.

Truly, no one would blame her if they knew what she'd been dealing with.

The box was a sleek rectangle, almost a square. Wrapped in simple gold paper, it looked unassuming and yet she felt like it was anything but.

She picked it up from the counter—he must've placed it there when she was getting dressed—and ripped the paper off with shaking fingers, carefully cracking open the fancy box it was hiding underneath.

Her gasp was loud in the stillness of the kitchen. Nestled on a bed of white silk was a delicate golden necklace with a small, sparkling charm hanging from the centre. It was beautiful; deep green emerald leaves surrounding the shiniest diamonds she'd
ever seen.

Looking up into his eyes was an even more beautiful sight; they were shining in that shy way of his that reminded her of their first few dates together. And this necklace...

"It's stunning, Ben. Thank you."

Hours later, curled around each other like they so often were these days, Ben broke the quiet of the moment, his fingers running over the necklace still fastened around her neck. "You know, these were originally rubies."

Her head shifted to see him better. "Rubies? But that would've made it—"

"Holly. I know." His smirk crinkled his eyes in that way she loved. "I had the jeweller switch them to diamonds. Figured we should finally get our mistletoe moment."

Her giggles rang out around them until his lips met hers, mistletoe charm pressed firmly between them.

Being labeled the 'Assistant Killer' wasn't nearly the worst thing he'd ever been called.

He'd admit it was worse than the 'Prince Solo' title his high school classmates teased him with. Worse than the 'Kylo Ren' that followed him to his first job, curtesy of his boss being an old family friend that was around for his unfortunate bad boy phase.
Maybe not as bad as the 'Supreme Leader' title that plagued him throughout university, but still.

It wasn't his fault the assistants couldn't keep up with his workday. That's what they're literally paid to do. If it made him the bad guy to point out their failings and make it clear he required at least some common sense in his employees, then fine. He'd be their 'Assistant Killer’. Gladly.

At least this new one had some potential.
She needed a teacher; someone to guide her in the ways of the office, but compared to the others, she caught on quickly.

And if she happened to be an overly positive, smiley kind of person, well, that would only balance out his more moody attitude.

"Good morning, Mr. Solo! Here's your coffee." Handing him his usual to-go cup, she took her place in front of his desk, ready for the day as if she wasn't almost ten minutes late. "As for today's schedule..."

Like he did every morning, he simply watched her as she outlined his day, running her finger over the list on her ridiculous bright pink tablet. Funny that, since anything other than black was strictly not permitted.

His brows furrowed as he looked her over— really looked this time-and noticed the sweater she wore was another thing not
allowed in the office. Except, she was always wearing it, or at least something similar. How had he not noticed the blatant dress code violation before? Or any of her other violations, for that matter?

And most importantly, why wasn't he bringing any of it up to her now?

He brought his coffee to his lips,
contemplating his confusing lack of action, and almost spit the drink right back into the cup. Sweet and creamy and definitely not the black coffee he survived on.

"Something wrong, sir?" Her voice was just as sweet as the drink, just as decadent. The way she tilted her head showed off her delicate neck, pulling his eyes there like a magnet.

He was shaking his head before he even realized it was moving. "No, nothing wrong." The smile she gave him brought out the dimples he loved seeing and that was when it clicked.

Writing her up, demanding she follow company policy just like everyone else in the office would mean dimming that smile of hers. It would mean no more cheerful hellos, no more absurd pink tablets or bright knitted sweaters; no more of his daily doses of sunshine.

'Assistant Killer' he may be, but 'Sun Killer' he was not.

Decision made, he brought the cup back to his lips, sipping on the drink as he listened to his little Rey talk about meetings and upcoming collaborations and whatever else he was responsible for.

All he could focus on however, was his newfound love for hot chocolate.

The wreath itself was fine. The colour he complained about actually looked nice against the door. It was the bundle of jingle bells hanging down in the wreath's centre that was the real problem.

The festive, jolly sounding bells that looked awfully similar to a pair of saggy balls.

He couldn't say that, of course. Especially not after finally convincing Rey to use his card several holiday seasons into their relationship. "I'm sure we could exchange it.
Maybe even hit up a different store and see other options."

"I already took the tag off. Besides, I spent a long time looking at everything they had and this one matched the rest of our decorations the best. Do you really not like it?"

She looked up at him with those doe eyes he loved so much, so concerned and sweet, that he made his peace right then and there with the damn ballsack wreath. "It's perfect, sweetheart."

She didn't even particularly like the festive treats, but now she'd never be able to eat one again without thinking about this moment.

Poe's smile was positively feline as he sat back, throwing his arm over Finn's shoulders. "I know you're wondering, so I'll just tell you. No need to ask."

Confused-she was clearly unwilling to hear any more and she certainly didn't have questions-she frowned back at him but found his eyes on Ben instead. When she glanced up, she found her boyfriend's attention completely on Poe, eyebrow raised in curiosity.

"Yes," Poe said, pulling Finn into his side, "it did tingle." Rey's gasp was lost to more laugher.

"Actually," she said, skating over to the boards he loomed over, "I have a key. And permission from the owners," She added in a rush, seeing his argument before he could make it. "I'm almost finished, though."

His scoff was snobbish. Entitled, like he expected her to cater to his demands simply because he said so. Unluckily for him, she had a lifetime of being stubborn under her belt and she wouldn't budge. Especially not on this.

"You're not 'almost finished"" he said, knuckles turning white from how tight they gripped his bag. "You're done. I need the rink."
