Anything else is really running the risk of wearing out their brand until they hit the inevitable point of no return.

At some point, the Dex will be so big that filling the National Dex will be more of a chore than fun task. Doing so every generation or two...

Personally, I think that they need to go all in on Regional forms for the foreseeable future. Whole mainline games full of them and a few new evolutions.
