Day 5: Basement of #midvembernotes
More fiction again, bit more dialogue heavy here.
Day 5: Basement "Goddamn leak," I pulled the wrench back again, hard. No matter how much I tried to tighten this damn screw, it just kept dripping. Slowly. Like a fucking needle in my ear with every drop. "Well maybe we should call a plumber." Her voice piped up, soft and affectionate, behind me. "It's been leaking for what, a month now?" "Three," I gritted out through my teeth, a grunt punching out as I nearly slipped off the latter. "Fuck!" "You're always really good at figuring things out babe, but maybe—" "You should try asking a professional." We both said at the same time. I heard her chuckle, unbothered, me frustrated, her probably smiling and rolling her eyes like I was a kid trying to drive a car. "Yeah, well, you wouldn't have to be huffing and puffing over there if you just asked for some help. Why not call Quinn? He could help, he's handy." "You know why." My hands dropped to the latter, the wrench left hanging on the pipe. I could almost smell the disapproval behind me. "Hey. I know it's been a lot, but it might be good to–" "No. You can't say that to me, don't get to say that to me." I pulled the wrench off and climbed down, tossing the useless thing in the toolbox like I couldn't get it fast enough away from me. What could I use to fix this, why can't I just fucking fix this— "Hey." Her voice was closer, or maybe it was an echo, I don't know. "I know it's been hard. But he's a good guy, and ignoring him won't stop you from feeling the way you do." "Yeah?" I punch out with a chuckle. "You think I should what, just go over there and fucking marry him or something?" "No, of course not, but that doesn't mean–" I could feel the ghost of a hand hovering over my shoulder, so close. But it never made contact because I dropped to floor. I curled into myself, bracing against my knees for any kind of support. "I can't– it's– it's like there's a part of me that's all fucked up, and the minute he shows up it's not so fucked up, and I just can't–" I could feel my throat tighten up, an ocean just waiting to push out of my chest. "No. No." She sighed, another failure. Another thing she would get to add to the list of her disappointments. "You can't hold onto the pain forever. It's not fair to you." "It's not fair to you." I choked out. "It's not fucking fair to you that I get to move on, and feel good when I fucking killed you." Silence covered the basement, so I had to fill it. "No, if I had just showed up on time and been there when you'd asked, you'd be here right now. Just laughing at how bad I wanna be a plumber or mechanic or– I don't know what they're fucking called. And you'd call one of the local guys and already have it set up for Tuesday, while you pulled me upstairs so we could have dinner cause I forgot. Again. You'd be here, and I wouldn't be having to talk to your fucking voice in my goddamn head and I wouldn't be forgetting you." Breaths started come in quick and sharp, my hands even more wet now than before. My voice came out so quiet it barely bounced off the concrete wall in front of me. "I can't even see you anymore." Silent, again, but then her voice came in. Soft, right by my ear. "You aren't forgetting me by moving on." "But I don't deserve–" "It's also not your fault." Ever patient, her voice the same gentle cadence. "It's not your fault." I tried to get a hold of my breathing, get any air in, hands splayed on the coolness of the wall in front of me. Her voice kept ringing in my ears: He's a good guy, you can't hold onto the pain, it's not your fault, it's not your fault. My breathing slowed. Time eventually came back to me, but her voice didn't. I felt the ridges on my palms, the cold air starting to sink into my bones, but her voice didn't come back again that night. I finally turned, looking over my shoulder at the empty basement minus the latter and a single red bucket under a rotting pipe. Stood, picking up another wrench from the box in front of me. Climbed the latter. Tried again.

Day 4: Satellite

Bit of a fiction dabble here, bit post-apocalyptic type beat 🛰️
It was November, or October, I think. Cloudless night, the way it always was. I had to pick up my sister, drop off some letters, and grab some dinner. Ride, stop, ride, home. We didn't get much out here in terms of excitement or even entertainment. Church had it's music, if you could stand the same words coming out the mouth of its straight backed, holier-than-thou pastor. No movies, no tv, no radio. Only the sheriff's radio, and it was limited to three stations that talked about the weather, the government, and emergency broadcasts. Which was, technically, all the government. Not that I could ever listen to it. I heard sometimes they played a little jingle before important announcements. Mary said she heard it once when she stopped by the station with her pops. I think Mary likes to pretend she knows things. I saw the end of a guitar once, long straight piece of wood with its odd ridges. Mary said they used to pluck at the string like you would a feather off a bird for it to make a sound. I don't know if that made much sense. There was nothing you could pluck. I wonder what sound would play if you plucked at wood. But it was getting late, or early really, winter making its rounds earlier. Right. Sister. Letters. Dinner. By the time I got on my bike, the moon was already out and high, the stars tracing back from it like they'd flaked off and scattered across a dark carpet. My eyes were stuck on its patterns, my feet driving forward towards the familiar roads, my body and bike knowing the path forward with ease. But my eyes traced the stars and how they'd move, always consistent but not, always there but not. I could always count on the stars. But what wasn't the same came in a flicker of white. I almost didn't notice it, my body lurching to a stop as I pressed against the brakes. A contrasting speed against the familiar near imperceptible slow. It flickered and pulsed and moved, like a blinking question mark tracing across the sky. I'd never seen anything like it, and wondered what marvelous thing it could be. Could it be a ship, like I'd heard from Uncle's friends? A sky ship that travels so high and so fast that it can race from here to the other side of the world in a day. They said we used to have sky ships that could go to the moon and back. I wonder if this was that.

Floating on grass Heads feeling high There's nothing so soft But your eyes seeing mine. The sun's creeping low Warmth turned to cold A hand tracing bodies With no hurry home. Belly-full of laughs and a room full of smoke, it almost went unnoticed, the static. A soft buzz, drifting from the left, to the right, it all comes down to the center. Is it a TV? A broken radio? No, the buzzing's louder, almost head splitting, slipping into their ears like a worm that just won't get out. Get out? The doors are gone, and there's no way to leave. Why would you? You have all you need. We've given you everything you need. The buzzing, it's kind of soft. Feels smooth over the brain. Kick back a while, won't you? You can bum a smoke, if you want. Belly-full of laughs and a room full of smoke, it almost went unnoticed—

Unfortunately more symptoms have come up & Sammy is now having to do another set of ultrasound and x-rays. We're closer to answers, but savings are pretty much at their end, so if you're able to share and reshare, it all helps. Not the most ideal update, but here we are. #doggo
