Does your work on identity have any implications for the concept of personality?
July 26, 2025 at 11:16 AM
If identity helps us feel constant, then we should identify with the one true constant – the ever-changing nature of life itself. Fascinating!

That’s interesting. Maybe it’s a remnant of a paternalism that’s gradually being challenged by consumers with more knowledge and scepticism toward experts. So, ‘I believe this label captures your experiences, this is how I came to my conclusion, do you agree?’. I’d happily hear your other thoughts.

A British friend who lives in NYC said local women were shocked he actually asked them questions—apparently most men there treat dates like job interviews, just listing achievements. Is that typical for dating in the US or is it just an NYC thing?

The Dark Money Game by Alex Gibney is really informative in respect to these issues.

Thanks, Alex. I also re-read your Physics World article. Given the many unhelpful diagnoses you received, and the insight gained through your own more accurate self-diagnosis, how do you think the diagnostic process could be improved?

Very confusing. For Feldman Barrett, emotion = prediction + affect + concept. Emotion and thought feel like two sides of the same coin: emotion = a one-word summary (anxious) with an affective tone (dizzy) signalling injury (like physical pain), while thought conveys the message (danger, escape).

Are you referring to the “working class man with a direct manner”?
July 14, 2025 at 2:40 PM
A great dissection of a seemingly common-sense idea that’s actually loaded with hidden values and flaws.

Who can do the most press-ups?

What an episode. Funny too. Thank you.

That’s below the belt, son.

Thank you. Re Ciharova, it looks like only 2 of 210 therapy conditions were significantly over the usual maximum number of sessions for depression (41 + 60 vs approx 20). Do you think the heterogeneity of depression contributes to a ceiling effect from therapy?
June 24, 2025 at 8:09 AM
How much of an effect would doubling the amount of prescribed sessions (eg from 20 to 40) have on depression recovery rates?
June 22, 2025 at 10:59 AM
Cognitive decline.

Hope you’re okay.

Very cool. Ever considered podcasting?
June 20, 2025 at 7:56 AM
I don’t think it has.

“How’d you like it, geez?”

“Short back and evil, please.”

Staking his leadership on bland but effective management and moral seriousness is risky, since politics is driven by passion, morally messy, and not known for competence.

Congrats on the new job btw. I assume These Times won’t be returning in its original form.

Your username, actually. I should’ve clocked much sooner, not least because my father called it me for years.
