I also enjoy the hyphen’s ability to softly combine two things while keeping them separate, as a semicolon does with two independent clauses. Those German extremists would probably go with finelytuned.

I’m aware the style guides don’t approve, but I’m a fan. “Finely” and “tuned” function as a single semantic unit—i.e. an adjective modifying “machine”—so I find the hyphenation both generous to the reader and aesthetically pleasing. Hyphens are cool and so is helpful punctuation.
