i swear to you that i nearly replied this song to your last #MotherNatureSong post. but i didnt. and now I'm chagrined. as if Emerson hadn't warned me of that very likelihood, too!

Jude's mums my dear friend Jude, nearly thirty years dead, used to say in a poem, “it’s the mums again” and boy was she right. it always is. the whiteboard cries in the world where it feels every loss. every erased fawn - every missed feeding. we all cry though - no very good reason why any should not. look at the latest returns look at the pines snatching rumpled bits of cloud and collared doves clinging to the wires, close and compact, against the late summer, early grave sky. of course there are tears falling in the world. grief clangs against our ribs like a buoy bell rolling over the tides tolling the distance to gone all gone. and eight swallows died. of course not every erasure is a loss nor is any loss an erasure - illustrating a way in which words are poised to betray. autumnal remnants slip out of their bins. why is this world always on the verge of never being the same again

poem in NorthCoast Journal august 14, 2025 horses, burden, vraiment


 you don't tell what you know you barely know what you tell. not news, i know. but we lurch into a wave broken on its spine or die trying anyway the midnight sky isn’t any murkier than the the bottom of the sea and the next world doesn’t care all that much how we feel about its timing. any pregnant pause can tell you that. my own purchase is what? not a toehold, not a bag of groceries, not a splendid view of orion coming up over the mountain between here and there. you might say horse mountain you might say horse you might say horses in the briny salt air, eating their hay and standing - those there - these here - for now.

horses, burden, vraiment
