The emotional weight of deceiving Sabin vs. his duty as king to serve (and save!) his people.

The heartbreak of feeling unwanted, triggered insecurities of being deceived... maybe memories of the kinds of deception from double-faced politicians that led Sabin to flee the kingdom in the first place?

First off, GREAT start! I immediately feel the "busy market" energy here. My eyes want to look at everything (like in a market!).

Second, I LOVE Sabin (and Edgar/Gerad) in a cloak!

Gau has found and revealed his "shiny treasure," which is a single golden diving helmet. Banon and Terra look at it, and Terra asks: "Will this really let us breathe underwater?" Do not adjust your television set; this is not a screenshot from FF6, but instead is a still from The Simpsons: Season 11, Episode 4 ("Treehouse of Horror X"). Xena, Warrior Princess (or actually, the actress Lucy Lawless in her Xena outfit) is standing behind a podium at a convention, and in response to a fan pointing out a minor continuity error in her show, she replies: "Whenever you notice something like that, a wizard did it." Gau is cowering at the prospect of diving into the dangerous rapids of the Serpent Trench. Banon and Terra, in an uncharacteristic fashion for both of them, laugh at Gau's trepidation... ... and unflinchingly jump into the rapids.

The scene where Terra/Banon meets Gau is mostly the same, but the character dynamics feel harsher this time.

1. Banon makes the mistake of thinking his can keep up with a kid

Meeting Gau "in battle," he gets recruited when Banon throws the poor kid some dried meat. Having just wrestled with a freshly-fed Gau, Banon says: "Wheeze...... puff......! You're pretty fast!" (There's nothing in-game to imply this, but I'm guessing that Banon is not in peak physical shape like Sabin is and may literally be in danger of a heart attack at this moment. Hopefully he didn't have himself any dried meat earlier!) Trying to find a kind and gentle attempt to connect with the kid, Terra had asked if he was an orphan. Gau... probably doesn't know what that word means, and so repeatedly just calls Terra an orphan back. You know how kids are when they learn a new word. In the screenshot, Gau is saying: "Gau no orphan! Terra orphan!" Right before our actors leave the stage of this comedy of errors, Gau tells Terra: "Hey Old Lady! Hurry up! We're leaving!!"

In a way, it can be comforting when some things don't change. Like this kooky guy who, as always, seems to barely have a grip on reality. He's saying: You the clock maker? I been waitin' for ages! Terra stands in front of the kooky guy's house, but no traveling merchant on a chocobo appears. It just occurs to me that the sprite for the "merchant" is an Imperial soldier wearing green armor, like the ones Locke will find later in South Figaro. I've never really thought about it before, but I wonder what significance that could hint at? Is the merchant a former (or active?) soldier? Is the uniform a disguise? Hmm... 🤔

Sure enough, we end up washed up on the shores of the Veldt. Gau finds us and runs away, just like the original game. But afterwards, Banon/Terra have a brief discussion about where they are and determine that they must find a town.

Gau crouching over a washed-up and wiped-out Terra. After Terra awakens, Gau gets spooked and runs off. Banon and Terra have a brief chat. He's saying: That was Baren Falls we went over... So we must be on the Veldt. It's a vast wilderness. In the overworld map, we ended up next to a river that runs along the west side of the Veldt. This is the first visible change to the map that we've seen so far. The kooky old man's house is directly north of us.

I always play the three scenarios in this order: Terra, Locke, Sabin.

So, starting with Terra's scenario, Terra/Banon continue down the river until eventually running into... Baren Falls! You can probably guess where they end up next! #ff6 #ff6_dvp
The introduction to Terra/Banon's scenario: Knocked off-course, Terra and Banon must find a way back to Narshe... and the Esper... As the raft continues down the river, they make an unfortunate discovery about where it ends. As the dialogue box states: A WATERFALL?! We now see a shot of Terra flying off towards Baren Falls. The raft is no longer visible, so I like to think Banon and Terra literally flew off of the raft and are now plummeting down towards the Falls. Just like in the original game, as if plummeting down a massive waterfall isn't stressful enough, our intrepid party (now Terra and Banon) have to fight off Piranhas as well.

As Edgar/Sabin float away, we get a quick line from Banon setting up another change to the three-group scenario.

Shortly after this point, we'll get to see how this mod has rearranged the northern continent in the World of Balance. Our three groups don't end up where you'd expect. #ff6 #ff6_dvp
As Terra/Banon continue down the river on the raft, Banon tell her: Don't worry about them! That branch goes to Doma. I have no idea where this branch goes! The three-group selection screen, with minor changes. On the left is Banon/Terra, with Sabin/Edgar on the right, Locke on the bottom, and the save point on top. Mog is also there, currently hidden underneath the dialogue box where he's saying: Choose a scenario... kupo!

Here's the first major plot change. After fighting Ultros, Edgar jumps in after Sabin instead of just passively watching him float away.

This seems like a more realistic response. They just reunited after 10 years, and Edgar may still have protective instincts towards his baby bro. #ff6 #ff6_dvp

[FF6 DVP, 2 of 2] Back in overhead view, you see Banon (and Terra) on the raft, and Sabin (and Edgar) getting wiped down the river. Terra is calling after them: Sabin!! Edgar!!! [FF6 T-Edition, 1 of 2] After getting thrown out of the water by Ultros, Edgar unconcernedly (bordering on callously) shouts to his imminently departing brother: Sabin! You're on your own now! [FF6 T-Edition, 2 of 2] Back in overhead view, we only see Terra (and Banon and Edgar) on the raft. Poor Sabin has not only been knocked off the raft and is about to float away, but the DIALOGUE WINDOW IS BLOCKING HIM so currently we can't even see him go. Insult to injury. Terra is calling after him: Sabin!

Banon no longer has his "Pray" group heal skill, which is a huge loss.

Instead, he has the "Control" ability - like Relm does when she wears the Fake Moustache.

Unfortunately, none of the enemies have any really useful skills, so Control feels kind of useless here.

A battle scene against a Nautiloid and and Exocite. In Banon's menu, his three options are: Fight, Control, and Item. Banon controlling one of the enemies. The available commands are "Battle" or "Special" (which, in this case, is just a Blind attack that does minor damage). These underwhelming options are fairly typical for all the enemies available to control at this point.

Setting up for the first major change to the story, Gentle Banon asserts that they need to alert Doma first before heading to Narshe.

Originally, he just follows Edgar's lead, which is to head straight to Narshe.

(1 of 2) After the wounded Returner soldier warns everyone of the impending Empire arrival, and after Locke runs out to head to South Figaro, Banon decisively jumps in: We need to alert our allies in Doma, then make haste for Narshe. (2 of 2) Gentle but Decisive Banon continues, asking Edgar: As the king of Figaro, will you help me convince Doma to join us? (1 of 2) The same scene, but as depicted in FF6 T-Edition. The dialogue is pretty close to the original translation. Aggro Banon, suddenly not feeling so aggro after all, asks Edgar: What about us? (2 of 2) Decisive Edgar: We can escape down the Lethe River and make our way to Narshe.

Toned-down Sabin, gently reacting to Terra agreeing to try meeting with the frozen Esper. He simply says: Terra... Thank you... Original Sabin, saying his line: I'm not entirely sure I understand the plan... but what they hey! This sounds like it'll be fun! (That last line isn't shown in the screenshot, but I promise it's the next line he says.)

They toned Banon down a bit. He's a bit more gentle with Terra this time.

In Figaro Castle is a new character named "Mid." Is that somehow a play on "Cid"?

"Mid" is also an English slang word meaning something akin to "boring," "uninspired," or "unimpressive."

Anyway, Edgar hasn't broken either of these tools yet. Maybe he's taking good care of them. #ff6 #ff6_dvp
Locke is talking to a new character in Figaro Castle named "Mid." Mid uses the sprite of the weird green men in Gogo's Lair, except Mid is colored orange and red instead of green and orange. Mid introduces themselves: I'm an apprentice Toolsmith. Tools are great in battle, but they can break if you're not too careful. Mid continues: You'll want to stock up if you're going to be gone for a while. Here are a couple on the house! Mid gives you a "Noise Blaster" and a "Bio Blaster." Mid concludes: I hope I can become a master toolsmith someday!
