Grief is hard, depression is hard, and they work hand in hand. Despite them, I haven't been crushed yet. I don't know who I will be on the other side of this journey, but I am glad I am still here for it.

Some days it is all I can do to just make it through them, and that is okay.

Lastly, the #Warhammer 40,000 Grand Narrative, just concluded in Atlanta, GA. The Games Workshop team outdid themselves, and I was proud to have my army selected for the community showcase. This was among the nerdiest things I've ever done, and so incredible.

I competed at #Evo 2025 for #StreetFighter 6. It was hard for reasons totally unrelated to the game, but the FGC is one of the most special things in all of gaming and this year I felt it more than ever. To be in that crowd when this match happened was incredible.

A big trip I took after my mom died was to #AEW All In. I was trying to keep it together all weekend, and it was Nigel McGuinness who picked up on it. All of the talent there that weekend helped me, and this moment filled a hole in my heart even if just for a little while.

I wanted to share some things that have helped me stay here this past year. Maybe someone else will see them, and it will help them stay here too.

It's like Bill Hicks said, life is a ride and we can get off any time. So maybe we just choose the things that keep us on the ride.

Bluesky isn't really a place for this kind of thing, but I have no fear anymore. I have nothing else I can really lose, and a kind of freedom I haven't known before.

I'm filling my life with things to look forward to. Trips to events for my hobbies and passions. Buying the things that I'm interested in. Enjoying meals at the restaurants I love. Trying to work out more regularly. Trying to find out who I am and what I'm here for, now that I'm alone on this Earth.

It's November now. I'm clearing out her home, the house that I grew up in. I'm overwhelmed by memories of a time when my life was better than it is now, when I didn't feel so alone all of the time. I am crying often, remembering the times I shared with her and my dad. Emotion hits me suddenly.

I had friends too. One of her last wishes was that her remains be spread in the gulf coast at Bay St Louis Mississippi, a town she and her family visited often when she was younger. I knew doing that trip alone would kill me, as sure as I know the sun will rise. Two friends made that trip with me.

Did you know how estates work? Do you know what probate courts are?

To my very great fortune, my mom's will was clear. I was on all of the necessary bank accounts and investments and the house. So much of the usual agony was spared. I still have taxes to file, because of course there are taxes.

@jamesgunn.bsky.social and DC's Superman released at a time when I was at my lowest, and had nothing. I saw it 4 times in theaters. I cry at the scene with the Kents every time. It helped me find my feet again so I could start on the rest of the work. "The business of death" as she called it.

I think about those two weeks a lot, because they were my last with her. I flew back to Austin on June 29th. My mom had a stroke, and died, on July 2nd.

My world stopped then. It is fair to say I almost didn't make it out of that month.

Honestly, it was Superman that saved me.

I was reassigned again, and took two more weeks in June to go see my mom. The facility was much better, the staff was more present, and she was in much less pain and anxiety. We started hospice to help her manage her pain, on a temporary basis.

Work became a refuge at that time. It was an amazing project and an amazing team. Genuinely one of the best I've worked on in my long, long career.

It was, of course, doomed. I was laid off again in May, while I was in the parking lot of a convention I'd organized events for.

While there, my mom contracted pneumonia. They said she healed from it, but when we transferred her to her new home in February things got worse fast. She couldn't maintain her blood oxygen levels and was sent back to the hospital.

made a different plan. We changed to a much better facility. Her first home, one we were pressured into based on the homes recommended by the hospital (as I would later find out, because they're all owned under the same banner), was an unremitting horror show.

Did you know that Medicare is administered by private health companies in Ohio? Because I didn't, and I found out that United Healthcare was denying my mom's coverage despite appeals and letters from her doctors, nurses, and nursing home staff. One hundred twenty thousand dollars in the hole, we

While that was all going on, I was dealing with my mom's healthcare. We were denied coverage by Medicare for her nursing home, despite the fact that she couldn't walk or care for herself any more. Forty thousand dollars a month, to start.
November 18, 2025 at 10:57 PM
I still had my full time job to do as well, which was also profoundly challenging. I was laid off in October, but moved to a different internal team later that month. That team was incredible, but was itself shut down in May.
November 18, 2025 at 10:57 PM
This would set the stage for the horrors of the last twelve months. I was traveling between Austin and my hometown, spending thousands on travel to catch weeks with her, to be there when she needed me, and to handle all of the paperwork and bills.
November 18, 2025 at 10:57 PM
The first conversation I had, when I arrived, was about cutting off my mom's legs. Due to a lack of cleaning, there was so much dead flesh that maggots were breeding in them. Turns out that was a good thing, as the maggots stopped her healthy skin from necrotizing.
