The U.K.’s NICE agency (which determines which medicines are deemed cost-effective) had determined that the HepB vaccine was not cost effective because the infection rates were so low in the U.K. But for a globally-connected country like U.K., this justification seemed so short-sighted

As part of a project on liver cancer in mid-2010 I studied global Hepatitis B vaccinations across different countries and was shocked to discover that the U.K. was one of the few countries *in the world* to not vaccinate for HepB. They finally added it in 2017 pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

As part of a project on liver cancer in mid-2010 I studied global Hepatitis B vaccinations across different countries and was shocked to discover that the U.K. was one of the few countries *in the world* to not vaccinate for HepB. They finally added it in 2017 pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
For those unaware, among the MANY reasons why this study is unethical is that there is no cure for Hepatitis B which can lead to fatal outcomes such as liver failure or liver cancer (unlike the existing-yet-expensive cure for Hepatitis C, but for which there is no vaccine)

I read Alive decades ago after finding a copy in a cabin that I was staying in during snow storm—story stayed with me ever since (and helped in that whatever situation I might sometimes find myself in, it was never as dire as theirs)

And Alive is absolutely gripping! (though I consider it more of a true-life adventure, like Into Thin Air (also amazing), and not sure if considered a “history book”. But we can make our own rules??)

Someone in my LWV book club just recommended The Spy and the Traitor as “one of the most entertaining nonfiction books I’ve read in a long time: a real-life Cold War espionage thriller that reads with the pace of a novel.” It definitely seems to fit the criteria!
