I came off the DL to check out the big march in little San Leandro, California. Michelle Doppelt had already taken off her inflatable unicorn costume, but was looking forward to bringing him out again for the next protest. "We have to have fun and keep up hope," she said.

I was wondering what happened to Defund the Police www.nytimes.com/2025/10/03/n...

And last not least, Patti Martin of San Leandro made her sign all about...

Lilly Johnson, 20, had a lot to say at her first ever protest. (The back of her sign read "Jesus Saves." Her parents used to worry that it might not be safe for her to protest, but the San Leandro, CA march felt "super energizing" and peaceful.

Retired Army officer Gerard came to the San Leandro protest with an Army flag, for his service, and a US flag, for his rule as an officer of the court. "I swore two oath to defend the Constitution, and I take that seriously."

Melissa O' Kane (a @motherjones.com subscriber!) brought her mom, Marcia, out to her very first protest. It was a huge crowd for San Leandro, CA, a town of less than 100k. "It felt great to be part of a community, to see people greeting each other and being happy to be here."

Ralph Gonzales (with his wife Pat), an Army and Air Force vet, is concerned about what's happening to vets, and about the Marine deployment in LA. "That's not the mission. It really hurts." But he and his wife Pat were glad to see "all the support for basic rights out here."

Sheila Dickinson, Stacey Walker, and José (who preferred to just use his first name) all work at the public library. "It's affecting everyone. All our families. All our storytime babies."
June 14, 2025 at 9:06 PM
Emmeline, of Alameda, came out with the Philippine and US flags to stand up for her husband, who is undocumented. "He's been here since he was 6 months old, but now he has to live in fear."

Big turnout in little Alameda, CA including guy with TACO hat.

You've got to love that @michaelmechanic.bsky.social got @mcuban.bsky.social to weigh in about the misunderstood Richie Rich for this fascinating piece. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Everyone has been commenting on the links between Ed Martin and this guy. But it was @dfriedman.bsky.social who broke the story and has continued to advance it. Shoeleather reporting is irrepleacable. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

But probably my favorite was Soo-young Chin's whimsical reversible sign. She took the message about resisting doom and gloom to the April 5 protest, then added the part about billionaires today. She plans to show up again May 1. "Two protests a month is what I can do."

A couple of my favorite signs:

#NoKings protest in Oakland—a joyful, diverse crowd marching down Broadway in the spring sunshine.

One moreI I met another reporter there. This is @bomba-rass.bsky.social, a retired videojournalist who has hauled his camera out of storage and is documenting protests all over California. See his dispatches on his feed, or his YouTube channel FlyingLionTV.

Laurie is a minister. Ivan is a branding and strategy consultant. Laurie came out because it shocked her that immigrants are being "disappeared." "Being from Colombia, I've seen this movie before," Ivan told me. "People are polarized against each other until they forget why they hate each other."

Three generations: Pat, Emma, and Emma's almost two-year-old daughter. Pat and Emma went to the Women's March together, but haven't been to a protest since. Emma came to "protect things for her, the things that I had as a child." Things like "access to libraries" and "being able to speak her mind."

Meg Kalame only marched once before: To protest the Vietnam War. This feels that important. Cory Booker inspired her: "We all have to do something."

Jennifer's husband, Luis, is also a veteran. The flag normally goes on his motorcycle. "Trump thinks he owns this symbol, but he doesn't. He's a draft dodger. All the brothers that I've lost in the wars, the fathers and grandfathers, they're rolling in their graves. So we've got to show up."
April 5, 2025 at 11:51 PM
I asked Jennifer Diaz why she brought the flag. She's a 21-year Navy veteran. Never protested before. "As veterans, we usually try to focus not on one side or another. We try to show up for the country. But this is about loving the country. It's about being for something, not just against."

Cheryl Dougherty (left) has written postcards to voters and gone to protests, but "this is the most involved I've ever been." For Susana Soto (right) it was her first grown-up protest: The only other march she's been to was as a kid in a wagon, with the United Farm Workers in the Mission.
April 5, 2025 at 11:45 PM
Friends Kathy Brown and Vanessa Lithman brought their adorable kids "so we can show them what it's like to protest peacefully. This is going to be a big part of their lives." The joy that this day brought to many people really came through with all of them.
April 5, 2025 at 11:36 PM
Next, Travis Ng and Cindy Lozano. They've never marched before. Cindy is a social worker who cares for elderly people, and she came because "all of our clients are afraid of what's going to happen to them." She wanted to show up on their behalf.
