I can’t say I’m unhappy about the TikTok ban, and that gives me clarity and hope to focus more on Substack and here! After all, I enjoy deeper convos that longer-form and text-based content can bring <3

When I first arrived in the UK, after my first gig I was quickly asked why I didn’t have a TikTok account. I witnessed how my American friends were using TikTok all the time when I studied abroad in South Korea. Eventually, I started using a third-party app just to upload my songs’ reels on TikTok.

7/ That said, there is always a possibility that employers have those biases when hiring, and more DEI training and discussions would never hurt when biases slip through the cracks - and our brains. The news makes me realise I have lots of thoughts about #DEI. Maybe I should write more on this?

6/ It is hard to shape and fit your lived experiences and feelings into neat categories or statistical findings. The truth is, unconscious (or even conscious) biases could have been a reason why I didn't get certain jobs, or I just wasn't the most qualified!

5/ These biases lead to underrepresented job-searchers feeling confused, disoriented and doubtful about themselves - I've certainly been there. We also have limited information and less power compared to employers to reflect holistically on our experiences, which can add to the confusion and doubt.

4/ But at its best, DEI can be a conscious, systemic effort to redress inequities that stem from recruitment biases, especially these days when most co-workers would be aware that explicit racism is 'uncool' and 'unaccepted'. Biases often manifest in ways that are microaggressive and insidious.

3/ As an ethnically minoritised person in the UK and someone who has long been an advocate for diversity and inclusion even in my own personal life as best as I can, I know first-hand that it's challenging to condense this seemingly broad and elusive concept into three alphabets.

2/ I have my own nuanced, complicated opinions about DEI, but I still think it's one of those things that is more needed than not, even when it's 'imperfect'. And we should strive to improve them (how to do so in itself is a whole discourse) instead of eliminating them altogether.
