In Spanish, the demonym for people born in the U.S. is “estadounidense”. In French, you can say “États-unien(ne”), and in Italian “statunitense”.

To avoid this controversy, you can say “U.S. citizen” or “from the United States.”

The previous Pope was also American, he was from Argentina, specifically. “American” as the word used to refer to people with U.S. nationality is a limitation or a gap in the English language.
