Has anyone else noticed that the @waymo.bsky.social cars in SF have started driving, well, Way Mo aggressively over the last few months? Maybe the rise of the machines is gradual...

My op-ed in the Mercury News:

A proposed HHS rule would delay vaccine updates and stall innovation by forcing unnecessary placebo trials.

It’s bad science — and worse public health.

Opinion: One-size-fits-all placebo rule would slow Bay Area vaccine updates
A pending Department of Health and Human Services regulation risks harming public health and stalling innovation.

Has anyone noticed that the new "torpedo" baseball bats aren't shaped like torpedos? Was "club bat" already taken or something?

For those less familiar with research funding, this means that in places like UCSF there would be a 75% reduction in the part of funding used for things like paying rent, building labs, and keeping the lights and heat on. If this sticks it pretty much ends health research at most US universities.
Friday evening drop: NIH announces, effective immediately and including for already-issued grants, a new indirect cost rate of 15% across all grants. There will be much to adjust to at medical research universities, if this sticks.

Dear medical friends: I welcome you to visit me in the reading room and I would be happy to review a study with you. I can also promise you that the first question I will always ask is "What's your patient's MRN?" Please don't be surprised by that.

Score 20% - that's terrible! But wait: Incredibly counter-intuitively, score is # correct / 30, not percentage correct.

When you need half of your UI to explain what's going on in the other half, you're doing something wrong.

In every additional iPhone app that provides decision support for a radiology grading system, I see a triumph of radiology research and a total failure of radiology informatics. #RSNA24

Reminder to #RSNA24: “No significant difference” is not evidence of equivalence in the absence of any discussion of what difference your analysis is powered to detect. This is unfortunately a frequent error in scientific presentations.
