Happy Election Day, Seattle!

I found myself subconsciously expecting there to be hard DVD-shaped objects in these ballot envelopes while I walked them to the drop-off box. Guess the early Netflix days hard-wired my brain.

For my sign, I went with a lyric from a local musician (Macklemore)

My sign lays on a table. The cardboard is covered in blue construction paper. Two printed pages, Marker font, all caps, in the center read: “THE PROBLEM ISN’T THE PROTESTS, IT’S WHAT THEY’RE PROTESTING.” This is from Macklemore’s Hinds Hall. The words “protests” and “what they’re protesting” are in larger black font; the other words are red. The sign is a little shiny because I wrapped it in packing tape so it will withstand rain and more protests.

Hackers really didn’t optimize for mobile
NYU.edu except instead of the normal purple logo and whatever banal photo is usually on there it’s a poorly formatted missive in mint green on black about how affirmative action is illegal but NYU continued it anyway. A large “Cho inside” logo appears over top of the anti-DEI rant so you can’t read the text well. There are some charts of SAT scores by race. Links to raw data of SAT scores that say PII redacted. Probably other stuff, I’m honestly not reading this very closely.

Crafting tip: by twisting together LED lights and gold star twine, you too can make festive barbed wire
Six presents (mostly books) wrapped in birthday-themed wrapping paper, encircled by a party garland made of a strand of colored led lights twisted together with metallic gold twine with little sprigs of gold stars. The whole effect of the garland is, as my spouse out it, “a little bit Amnesty International” or, as the birthday boy put it, “cool barbed wire”

Brutal, NYT. I know this is a word because our vet just used it to describe our dog’s liver tumor.
NYT Spelling Bee game telling me “CAVITATED” is not in their word list instead of giving me points for my pangram. “Cavitate” means to form bubbles or cavities.”

A few hours later, and the burned-out Jumbo building is gone.

✅ Burdensome permitting processes bypassed
Nighttime shot of two cranes where the vacant Jumbo building once stood, a day after it burned. The parking lot is still a giant puddle from last night’s fire hoses. A chunk of the graffitied facade lays between the cranes, its reflection cisible in the giant puddle. Only one piece of the building’s peach wall remains, in the far back corner. Behind the cranes you can see the illuminated Darigold Milk factory, now visible from Genesee St. because the Jumbo is gone.

Learned some firefighting terminology:

The day after a fire, when the flames are out but a building is still smoking and smoldering, is called “the decay stage.”
A photo taken from the edge of the parking lot of the former Jumbo building on Rainier and Genesee in South Seattle the morning after the fire of the building in the decay stage. The sky is light grey, as usual. It’s hard to tell what’s a cloud and what’s a puff of smoke rising from the smoldering building. The middle of the vacant Jumbo building is charred black and crumbling. The left and right parts of the building still bear the original outdated peach paint, covered in graffiti. The “Jumbo” signs are still visible on the left and right, but smaller and less prominent than the graffiti. In the foreground are two neighbors (one standing, one in a wheelchair), their backs to the camera, looking at the wreckage. The parking lot is a giant puddle, reflecting the charted and graffitied building.

How many more users do we need for Bluesky to be a place where I can expect to find posts about breaking news in my city, like the abandoned grocery store a few blocks from me in South Seattle that is currently on fire?
The abandoned Jumbo grocery store on Genesee at Rainier Ave. A construction site-style fence is toppled over in the foreground with a thick layer of trash around it. The building has large graffiti letters where there was once signage. Orange smoke rises from the building, blowing east.
