Despite some suggesting that Trump's tariffs could inadvertently lower emissions due to the economic damage they could create, CB analysis finds that the impact might only be 0.3% of emissions this year

So, there's no upside?

With that Bonn #SB62 has officially come to an end
June 26, 2025 at 10:20 PM
"I’m not going to sugar coat it – we have a lot more to do before we meet again in Belém," said Simon Stiell.
We must find a way to get to the hard decisions sooner. We need leaders and ministers to roll up their sleeves."

India says that it is surprised with the speed of the gavel, given the length of the text. It says that elements are missing from the text.

This should be taken on the record, and whether this is a mistake should be considered.

Bolivia notes that it hasn't seen the document, and will need time after it's uploaded to review it before it can be adopted.

Iraq for G77+China states that it is not in a position to adopt the agenda item as it hasn't seen it, and requests that the plenary be extended to allow parties to review it

Turkey has said it will also continue constructively engaging to help reach a decision, and pointed to its commitment to multilateralism
June 26, 2025 at 9:19 PM
Australia has said it will work to help resolve the question of who will host COP31 - them or Turkey.

New Zealand added its support for the "unique partnership" of Australia and the Pacific Islands as host for COP31

France, Norway and Switzerland added their support

The closing plenary of the #SB62 has finally gotten underway, more than three hours late, with the co-chair noting there are elements without conclusion
June 26, 2025 at 8:36 PM
Draft conclusions for the just transition work programme have now been published at #SB62, and include a number of key principles being welcomed by observers.

This includes the continued inclusion of an option for a new institutional arrangement in para. 28, which will be further discussed at COP30

As people file into the negotiation room to continue work on the global goal on adaptation on the penultimate day of Bonn #SB62, a silent action outside calls for the inclusion of finance,

The goal to double adaptation finance comes to an end this year, with nothing specific agreed to follow

As negotiations in Bonn #SB62 move into the final days, a demonstration in the hallway calls for a “just transition, not just words”

I’m in Bonn for the #SB62 negotiations with @joshgabbatiss.bsky.social

Give me a shout if you have any tips about adaptation, mitigation or the just transition work programme, or if you fancy a coffee and a catchup

Low-carbon power met more than 40% of global electricity demand in 2024, driven by the continued surge in solar power which was up 29% from 2023

However, due to demand increases driven by heatwaves, emissions still crept up by 1.6% to a record high of 14.6bntCO2

Trump pulling the US out of the Paris Agreement is “more annoying” than “dire”, says John Kerry. “The energy transition is not dependent on one elected official in one country.”

The “price point is going to decide what happens here, and the fact is that oil and gas is more expensive”.

For this week's DeBriefed, I took a look at the Super Grid expansion of the 1950/60s, and the similarities between objections to it and today's expansion,

Thanks to @katrinanavickas.bsky.social for talking to me about what can be learnt from the communication campaign at the time

Wind and solar have helped avoid cumulative emissions of some 460m tonnes of carbon dioxide (MtCO2) over the past five years, since the introduction of the Green Deal. This has continued the trend seen in the previous five years too, with solar in particular picking up pace

The US has released its NDC, announcing a goal of reducing its net greenhouse gas emissions by 61-66% below 2005 levels in 2035.

Some key takeaways from the plan include a breakdown of the electricity mix:
🌬️43-50 GW of offshore wind,
🍃27-29 GW of onshore wind,
☀️45-47 GW of solar power
🔋23-27 GW of battery capacity,
🗻4-6 GW of long-duration energy storage,
And flexibility technologies

The just transition work program is leaving Baku without an agreed text the president has confirmed in the closing plenary

Global goal on adaptation officially gaveled through at #COP29 without comment

Shortly followed by the mitigation work programme 🔨
November 23, 2024 at 11:25 PM
Final text for the mitigation work programme is out now too at COP29.

Very similar to the last draft, focused mostly on the dialogues instead of high-level messages. So no explicit mention of 1.5C and no reference to the global stocktake
November 23, 2024 at 10:02 PM
Final text for the global goal on adaptation is out at COP29, and contains explicit inclusion of means of implementation (finance),

This follows pushback from developing nations on the language being weakened to ‘enablers of implementation’ in the last draft
November 23, 2024 at 9:49 PM
Additionally, it announced the launch of the Baku Adaptation Roadmap, whereas the previous version merely decided to establish it, strengthening the language and the likelihood of continued work in this space
November 22, 2024 at 12:13 PM
The text 'recognises both incremental and transformational adaptation approaches'

The optional inclusion of transformational adaptation was another key diverging point in negotiations
November 22, 2024 at 12:05 PM
Some language on mapping means of implementation -a key point of divergence between parties- has made it into this draft

However,"means of implementation"has been broadly changed to"enablers of implementation"in this iteration, a softening of the language likely to appease developed countries
