Steeling herself, Lwaxana held out her hand to the cavat farmer. "Give me your blow gun." Enaren pushed her hand aside and removed his own weapon. "Okalan's my oldest friend. I'll do it." Before Lwaxana could protest, Enaren slipped through the underbrush toward the clearing. In what seemed only seconds, Lwaxana felt Okalan's gratitude and relief that his old friend was ending his life, his pain, and any chance that he might break and betray those he loved. Okalan welcomed death the way he'd lived, fearlessly, bravely, and with dignity. Wrenching sadness at the loss of a good man tore Lwaxana's heart. Okalan's thoughts slowed, emotions dimmed, then ceased for all eternity.

Thinking about this really fucked up cover art for the first TNG novel where everything looks fine except for Data, who looks like he's on some shit.
The cover of 1988's Ghost Ship, written by Diane Carey and illustrated by Enric Torres-Prat. It depicts head shots of Data (L), Riker (C), and Geordie (R) floating in space, with both the planet Earth and a vessel referred to as a "Research Dinghy" Data's eyes can only be described as wonky, as the entire top half of his head seems to tilt forward, or even be at a different angle to the bottom half.

Went to Star Trek Las Vegas, and I bought many a good thing (scripts included- even one of Patrick Stewart's personal scripts!), but one of my favorites was the novelization of The Motion Picture, which both has Kirk claim he's not gay, and has a better story than the actual movie.
Editor's note: The human concept of friend is most nearly duplicated in Vulcan thought by the term t'hy'la, which can also mean brother and lover. Spock's recollection (from which this chapter has drawn) is that it was a most difficult moment for him since he did indeed consider Kirk to have become his brother. However, because t'hy'la can be used to mean lover, and since Kirk's and Spock's friendship was unusually close, this has led to some speculation over whether they had actually- -indeed become lovers. At our request, Admiral Kirk supplied the follow- ing comment on this subject: "I was never aware of this lovers rumor, although I have been told that Spock encountered it several times. Apparently he had always dis- missed it with his characteristic lifting of his right eyebrow which usually connoted some combination of surprise, disbelief, and/or annoyance. As for myself, although I have no moral or other objections to physical love in any of its many Earthly, alien, and mixed forms, I have always found my best gratification in that creature woman. Also, I would dislike being thought of as so foolish that I would select a love partner who came into sexual heat only once every seven years."
