Soldiers of the 1st Louisiana Native Guard fr the Nau Center for Civil War History Rumored portrait of Andre Cailloux (1825-1866), who was born in Plaquemine Parish, Louisiana, enslaved at birth by the Duvernay family. At 21, Cailloux petitioned for manumission which was granted and while already a skilled mason and carpenter, he became a cigar maker before receiving a commission to be Captain with the 1st Louisiana Native Guard. He was one of the first Black Officers of any North American unit and one of the first Black soldiers to die in combat during the Civil War. Cailloux was killed during his regiment’s attack on confed fortifications (ordered by failed strategist Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks) at the Siege of Port Hudson. Cailloux’s heroism was widely reported, and his death became a rallying cry for Black men. Cailloux, described by Rodolphe Desdunes, whose brother, Aristide, served under him: *The eyes of the world were indeed on this American Spartacus. The hero of ancient Rome displayed no braver heroism than did this officer who ran forward to his death with a smile on his lips and crying, ‘Let us go forward, O comrades!’ Six times he threw himself against the murderous batteries of Port Hudson, and in each assault he repeated his urgent call, ‘Let us go forward, for one more time!’ Finally, falling under the mortal blow, he gave his last order to his attending officer, ‘Bacchus, take charge!’ If anyone should say the knightly Bayard did better or more, according to history, he lies.* Capt. André Cailloux remains were returned to New Orleans where his funeral was held July 29, 1863 and honored by a long procession and thousands of attendees. After Cailloux's death, his widow, Félicie, struggled to receive the financial benefits promised to veterans by the USG. After several years of effort, she received a small pension, but died in poverty in 1874, while working for Fr. Maistre So let us go forward, O comrades, let us go forward- for one more time.

That year, 23.6 million SNAP recipients (63% were adults, and 13.8 million (36%) were children. Characteristics of SNAP recipients, 2020 % of food stamp recepients Non-Hispanic White people accounted for 44.6% of adult SNAP recipients and 31.5% of child recipients in 2020. About 27% of both adult and child recipients were Black. Hispanic people, who can be of any race, accounted for 21.9% of adult recipients and 35.8% of child recipients. The vast majority of both adult and child recipients were born in the United States - 82.3% and 97.1%, respectively. Among adult recipients, 62.4% had a high school diploma or less education in 2020. On my way to Promise Land: *When the brilliant preacher Albert Cleage, Jr., founded the innovative church known as the Shrine of the Black Madonna in Detroit, he had an audacious goal: to combine Afrocentric Christian practice with radical social projects to transform the self-conception of its members. Central to this endeavor was the Shrine's chancel mural of a black Virgin and Child, the icon of a nationwide liberation movement that would come to be known as Black Christian Nationalism. The Shrine's members opened bookstores and co-ops, created a self-defense force, raised their children communally, and eventually established the country's largest black-owned farm, where attempts to create an earthly paradise for black people continue today. In his intimate and wide-ranging debut, Aaron Robertson sets the Shrine's story alongside a diverse array of black utopian visions, from the Reconstruction era through the countercultural fervor of the 1960s and 1970s and into the present day. He also traces his own family's journey from the historic blacktown of Promise Land, Tennessee, to Detroit, where Cleage's remarkable experiment got its start. The Black Utopians offers a nuanced portrait of the struggle for spaces-both ideological and physical-where black dignity, protection, and nourishment are paramount. This book is the story of a movement and of a world still in the making— one that points the way toward radical alternatives for the future.*

UNBOUND- A new commissioned sculpture by Harmonia Rosales at King’s Chapel, on Boston’s Freedom Trail, confronts the Chapel’s historical relationship to slavery, honoring the 219 identified children, women and men enslaved by ministers and members of King’s chapel. UNBOUND is a figurative bronze sculpture by Rosales depicting a woman freeing birds from a cage. The sculpture sits right outside of the Chapel’s doors and its imagery symbolizes freedom, transformation, and spiritual release in an attempt to honor the resilience and personhood of those held in bondage while inviting the public to engage the church’s very complex legacy. "Unbound", a sculpture by artist Harmonia Rosales, recently unveiled at King's Chapel in Boston. The bronze sculpture is a memorial to honor the 219 individuals known to have been enslaved by past members and ministers of King's Chapel. It depicts a Black woman releasing birds from a cage, symbolizing freedom and the resilience of those enslaved. The 14-foot statue is located along Boston's historic Freedom Trail and calls for reflection on the church's historical ties to slavery. The unveiling of Unbound is an attempt to acknowledge and confront Boston's ugly connection to slavery.
