Since AD&D2 is the lingua franca of my current group, though, I decided to retool, and make the game a big, fat love letter to that system. Briefly, I toyed with using one of those wonderful, untouched green books for an Elizabethan setting. Alas, that tome was too obscure to garner much interest.

It was going to be a GURPS game, once upon a time. The PCs were going to be human or hominid, from anywhen in Earth history covering 300,000 years. One of GURPS' great strengths is its ability to balance PC power, accounting for disparities in technological eras, backgrounds, and gear.

What makes this a fairy tale? Each player has been required to come up with a Heart's Desire to drive the character on their quest, plus a list of superstitions. I've promised that at least one superstition they invent/adopt will be implemented as an informal rule. They'll find out which in play.

Backgrounds? I've opened up all official xD&D settings, favorite homebrews and published fiction. One player's dusting off an old character. I don't care where the PCs come FROM, as play starts the moment they land. Similarly, I'm letting them invent any means they like for having crossed the Veil.

So, what's it about? Vendettas, mainly, so far. The players have each conceived a personal beef or quest for which their character has decided to enter Faerie.
