I'm not intimately familiar with the cogs and wheels of the US governmental machinery, but it seems to me that if Chuck Schumer and his coterie were secret double agents working for the Republicans, they couldn't have done much worse than they have done.

I think it was Mark Twain who said "I would never wish anyone dead, but I have read many obituaries with great satisfaction".

That quote came to mind recently, for some reason.

Trump is massively inflating the ICE budget for exactly the same reason that Hitler built up the SS. He wants a private army, loyal only to him, because he doesn't trust that in the clinch he'll be able to use the US army to hold the populace down.

Now be fair — he had to do SOMETHING to make himself feel important after nobody came to his birthday shindig.

The more I read about what Microsoft is doing with Windows 11, the less eager I am to swap to it. In fact, I feel not just disinterest, but an active desire to avoid it.

If Vance can just steer a path through to survive Trump's dementia-fueled pique and spite, he stands a good chance of becoming President For Life (until he's inevitably deposed by a cabal of generals, as is traditional in a tin-pot dictatorship).

I didn't know Bob Jones was still alive until he wasn't. So now he's aligned himself with my normal world view, which is unusually considerate of him.

I hope people are taking notes for future psychiatrists. We're getting ringside seats to see what happens when you combine immense stupidity, vicious cruelty, and petty vindictiveness, with enormous power.

I bet I don't even have to say the name.

"Historians dispute Bayeux tapestry penis tally after lengthy debate"

...is not a headline I ever expected to read, but that I am glad to have read.

It must be so exciting right now, being a US business and trying to plan more than six hours ahead. Weee! Rollercoasters!

If Trump withdraws US from NATO —not unlikely, considering his current trajectory— maybe NATO should investigate China joining. If you have to have an authoritarian monster as your military king-post, it might as well be one that acts rationally instead of an erratic unpredictable Crazy Drunk Uncle.

Trump may not be a Russian asset, but if he were, he'd be acting exactly as he is right now.
Trump may not be suffering from dementia, but if he was suffering from dementia he'd be acting exactly as he is right now.
Trump may not be the world's biggest arsehole, but... y'know what, he definitely is.

Must be doubly hard right now to be a Dem poli in the USA if you have the faintest degree of self-awareness, with the absolute worst people in charge of everything, and with the knowledge that even the people who are supposedly on the same side as you hold you in contempt for your spineless vacuity.

Why I Disapprove Of Art Competitions For Commercial Use

If you are a business, and you want a piece of art work for some commercial purpose, it is tempting to stage a competition. It looks like a good way to get to choose the best of a wide range of offerings, while paying peanuts.

I wonder if Americans will ever again be able to remember what it was like not to be ashamed and embarrassed about their commander in chief.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Trump didn't truly believe that he was the one using and scamming the Russians, and not they him.

I didn't realise that when people were talking about "checks and balances" in the US political systems, in NZ English they would have been spelled "cheques and (bank) balances".

The American AI-techbros have been hooting volubly for far too long about how AI is going to be a Great Disruptor, and how cool that is, but now that it's their own business being disrupted, all of a sudden it's not so cool. Funny that.

I'm feeling a palpable sense of doom in the air — perhaps because of the creeping (and creepy) rise of right-wing nastiness all over the world.

Or maybe because of a brain-chemical imbalance. But the two things aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

News media outlets everywhere are really tying themselves in knots to describe Elo'Muks' antics as anything, ANYTHING besides a nazi salute.

I saw one article that described him as "gesturing" during his speech. For fucks sake.

I'm not really familiar with US legal jargon, but that "unconditional discharge" thing sounds to me like it translates as "Yeah, you were convicted of 34 felonies, but now we're going let you off. Have a nice day."

Centre-left parties the world over seem to be obsessed with betraying their actual constituencies in an attempt to get the votes of people who ARE NEVER EVER GOING TO VOTE FOR THEM. And no matter how many times this strategy utterly fails, they'll just try again and again.
