I’m a retired person who discovered the zen of traveling across the Mojave Desert on an empty highway. Created this account to share my love of finding solitude in overlooked places.
View looking (west) towards Palm Springs, from The Living Desert hiking trail.

What's at the Living Desert Zoo in Palm Springs? A nice 5 mile loop hiking trail! The trailhead is just north of the big horn sheep enclosure. Available for hiking during the cold months, gate through fence locked during the hot summer months.

One final picture of the cliffs at Red Rock Canyon in California. I can't help being reminded of Utah.

More cliffs at "Red Rock" Canyon State Park. (LOL- Sometimes the Mojave can come across as a thousand shades of beige.) Campers at the bottom of the cliffs can provide some perspective of their size.

Nature trail with thousand foot cliffs in the distance. Close enough to Edwards Air Force base to see a F-22, and later a F-5, flying overhead.

Trip out to Red Rock Canyon State Park. The place resembles a part of Utah, rather than California. Has a great visitior center with historic displays and souvenirs. Beautiful nature trail near entrance winds through 1000-3000 foot high cliffs, great for a day hike!😊

Another view of Silverwood, desert to the left, forest to the right.

At Silverwood, a normally crowded summer beach, is a quiet retreat in winter.

Trip to the edge of the Mojave Desert at Silverwood Lake SRA. North side of Lake is desert, to the south is forested mountains bordering San Bernardino. Usually filled to capacity in the summer, virtually abandoned in Winter.

First post was looking up-river and this is looking down-river on the Mojave.

Walking by the Mojave River between Victorville and Barstow.

The trail to Amboy Cinder Cone, outside the ghost town of Amboy. The trail travels up and around the rim and through the center of the crater. A great winter walk, would not recommend for summer. Not a single inch of shade to be found throughout.
