Oh hey. It's my semi-annual appeal on behalf of my regular volunteer gig, Ruth's Refuge. We furnish the homes of the newest New Yorkers.

Drop off in person in Brooklyn or buy from the wishlist.

Matisse’s Young Sailor at The Met today fucked me right up. Color that’s impossible to describe.

Growing up in an 18th century house museum has given me very strong, very niche home decor opinions

e.g. wall pockets are superior to vases for flowers

salt belongs in a cellar, not a shaker

Beds need curtains

I can go on

As a NYer who already gets their groceries at a city-run grocery store - Essex Market, first of its name, may it go on forever - I genuinely think Mamdani should aim higher than one in each borough. Cause we already have that, and it's awesome, so let's expand so everyone has one nearby.

@wfuv.bsky.social spinning Everybody Hurts into New York Morning. Last Fare of the Day into Empty Sky into Imagine. The DJs aren’t talking about it, they’re playing it. This is the magic of live radio made by people. Text & subtext, obvious & oblique, evanescent over the airwaves.

Recently I booked what was simply called “signature scrub” at a day spa in Brooklyn. It was … more than that.

Nadine Gordimer's incredible, and incredibly strange, apartheid novel A SPORT OF NATURE has been my slowest reading experience in ages. It's dense, allusive, & is deeply grounded in a period I know shamefully little about.

Halfway through, and I need to talk about it. Anyone else read it???

I read the NYT and WaPo because I'm An Old, 404Media because I'm a nerd, and The New Yorker because I'm a snob.

But I subscribe to @hellgatenyc.com because I'm a goddamn New Yorker.

I volunteer with Ruth's Refuge, a fantastic org that works in partnership with local resettlement agencies to furnish the homes of our newest New Yorkers. If you've got a few bucks, consider donating to the 2025 summer air conditioner fund? donorbox.org/air-conditio...

I’ve read The Riders a dozen times since I first discovered it as a battered used paperback in ‘98 or so. Like most of my favorite novels, it’s bewildering that I would connect with a story so utterly apart from my own experience. And yet, and yet.

So anyway, this is spectacularly bad casting

Andrew Cuomo used ChatGPT to help write the housing plan he released this weekend, which included several nonsensical passages. The plan even cites to ChatGPT on a section about the Rent Guidelines Board.

Yeah, no, fuck alllllll the way off, Cuomo. NYC doesn’t need an egotistical bully with daddy issues and a shaky grasp of appropriate workplace conduct.

If I thought for one second he wanted to help people and not just exact revenge on folks who dared to stand up to him then *maybe.* But no.

This is vile, and yet another strategic step by the Trump administration to dehumanize trans people.

Call your reps. Today. Tell them 1) this is evil and 2) you expect them to stop it.

If you’re not a registered Dem, how’s about becoming one for the upcoming mayoral primary? Mayor Adams 🤡 sold us out, let’s vote him out

Deadline to switch or register is THIS FRI 2/14
