It's like you bullied the Spotify transcription algorithm into submission. I'm not sure if this is a win or not...

At the end of his article David Mitchell berates Gen Z for the things they don't know. But Mr Mitchell, here you show that you're just as ill-equipped to display critical thinking towards the construction and reporting of this survey, as this survey suggests Gen Z are regarding democracy.

And then, those pesky dictators. Focusing on the 52% of Gen Z who would prefer a "strong leader" ignores that 40% of 45-65-year-olds also seem to want the same thing! Weird that the 28-44-year-old group has gone missing, almost like excluding them makes the results look more stark...

My speculation here is about how that remaining 27% of Gen Z answered the question about democracy. A later figure shows there must have been a "don't know" answer that respondents could give. And I wonder if some don't knows could be, say, 13-17 year olds without a full grasp on what democracy *is*

Now we arrive at the big stats, first: democracy. And... the stats say Gen Z is pretty into it. 73% of Gen Z vs 90% of older generations

I'm not sure what to make of the stat about those who agree the UK is highly democratic because... how exactly are they defining the pre-war generation?!

Indeed, we see later on that they *can* break down their results into smaller age groups, but only when they want to. This means they do think they have the statistical power to stratify the data this way.

Again, we don't appear to have access to more complete data from the survey

While their own polling shows that older generations do place more trust in the BBC in comparison to other sources of information, Gen Z actually trust the BBC more overall!

(Also, 28-65 is a large comparator group, which may be obscuring some variation in attitudes.)

The findings on trust hierarchy are interesting when we think about the framing they choose. The focus is on Gen Z being more likely to trust social media posts than older generations, who "place more confidence in established outlets".

But...

My first critique is the least solid one, because I don't have much knowledge of polling. I'm unsure how you can describe a polling sample as nationally representative when you disproportionally represent one age group over all others - unless they mean it's rep. for all demography aside from age.

First off, a link to the report. I wanted to look at more of the findings, not just the attention-grabbing one. It's worth noting that I haven't been able to find a detailed write up of methods/results, and the citations seem to cite the report itself
