briefly considered doing the opposite of what you're talking about, covering these with thin, nice looking material that wouldn't dull a knife if it made contact with it diagonally

it does eliminate some confusion wrt preprints and conference papers that are republished in math and cs, but none that couldn't be resolved by the reader finding the version you cited
