Depicts a non-canonical instance that takes place some time after the Sundering of the Ancient World but before Emet-Selch’s meeting with the Warrior of Light in Shadowbringers from Final Fantasy 14. Emet-Selch sorrowfully reflects on the Azem crystal he made in secret as it rains. While gazing at the crystal, something catches his eye. He looks down in disbelief to find a worm, curled into the shape of a heart, writhing in a shallow puddle at his feet. To his disbelief, his soul sight discerns that this very adventurous worm in trouble is, indeed, a reflection of Azem. He recalls a seemingly pointless conversation he’d had with Azem years before in which she’d asked him if he’d still love her were she a worm. Although frustrated, he decides to rescue the worm and move it where it will have a better chance of survival, referencing Azem’s way of calling on friends during times of need. This is a bonus page for fun and giggles I made as a follow-up to the original “Would you still love me…?” story. It is read from top-to-bottom and right-to-left as you would read manga!

Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus from Final Fantasy 14 dressed as Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story! Just a fun thing for Halloween. Emet-Selch flashes Hythlodaeus an annoyed look as a blush crosses his cheeks; meanwhile, Hythlodaeus holds up Emet-Selch’s boot to show the viewer that it has “Azem” on the bottom of the boot rather than “Andy” and laughs brightly.

Hythlodaeus (as Buzz) is holding up Emet-Selch’s (as Woody) boot to show the viewer. Rather than saying “Andy” at the bottom as it would appear in Toy Story, it says “Azem.” Emet-Selch’s would-be five-pointed sheriff star is instead his memory crystal from Final Fantasy 14. As for Hythlodaeus, the emblem on his suit features an ancient mask and says “Elpis Ranger” rather than “Space Ranger.”

Azem playfully asks Emet-Selch if he would still love her if she was a worm; rather than dismiss her completely, he smirks at her and asks if she’d make a lovable worm. Azem pauses, gazing up at the sky with wrinkled brows and a soft smile, seemingly in thought, before offering him a response. Page two of two, read from top to bottom and right to left: Azem responds “aye” (yes) to Emet-Selch’s question regarding whether or not she would be a “lovable” worm. The text is laid beside an image of a nervous Warrior of Light, Eshii, whom Azem eventually becomes. Repulsed by her sundered form, Emet-Selch, pictured as he appears in Shadowbringers, scrutinizes her with a scowl. He closes his eyes in frustration and then smiles wistfully in acceptance, recalling their “would you still love me if I was a worm” conversation from years past, relenting to the fact that, even as a sundered being, “of course,” he will still always love Azem.

Okay so THE TRUTH IS this was a base for a model. Lesson planning is eating well into my drawing time, but… drawing your faves to model a project counts as lesson planning, too, right? Some students are lost as to what to draw for their fallacy posters. My answer: whatever makes your heart happy! 🥰

Emet-Selch from Final Fantasy 14 reflects on the Azem crystal as he lifts his head toward the sun amidst a sea of clouds and beneath a sky of stars. A halo of light resembling the symbol on the crystal he holds encircles the sun. An image of my own rendition of Azem is superimposed amidst the sun and stars, indicative of his memory of her as the "shepherd unto the sea of stars" while also serving as a nod to the symbol on her crystal. He is in his Ascian robes and has dark, cropped hair to indicate that this is taking place post-sundering. The Elpis flowers, though not glowing of their own volition in Emet-Selch's presence, catch the sunlight and still offer the promise of hope in this way.

Read from top-to-bottom, right-to-left. On page 1, Final Fantasy 14 characters and best friends, Hythlodaeus and Azem sit beneath a night sky before their world was destroyed. A shooting star passes overhead, and Azem asks Hythlodaeus what he will wish upon the star for. He ponders this thought with a smile. Continued from page 1, Hythlodaeus explains to Azem that his wish is to witness her wish come true. Although he makes this confession in the present-tense, it is conveyed over a series of art panels that reveal what is to come in the future: Azem’s sundered reflection, the Warrior of Light, meeting the shade of Hythlodaeus in Amaurot, gathering up constellation crystals, meeting him and Emet-Selch in the past, and seeing them once more in a field of Elpis flowers on Ultima Thule. It reveals that Azem’s wish is to always be connected to Hythlodaeus and Emet-Selch in some way. These panels are a non-canonical interaction inspired by the selflessness and unwavering devotion that Hythlodaeus exhibits toward Azem and Emet-Selch in Final Fantasy 14. They imply that he would gladly give everything, even his wishes, to see their dreams and causes fulfilled.
