If Kaveh never thought about it, and never dwelled on how Al-Haitham vanished for three day every six weeks and came back looking like he'd been run over by a Sumpter Beast that personally murdered his grandmother, things were almost good. He really should have known better. Nothing good in Kaveh's life ever came for free. Kaveh couldn't even really blame Al-Haitham for it. He'd grown careless, after the tournament, and then grown very busy. He hadn't kept track of his store of suppressants very well—not until he unexpectedly run out. Even then, Kaveh hadn't panicked—it took a few weeks for it to work out of his system when he stopped taking them. That would be plenty of time to go and get more. It wasn't like he'd go into a heat instantly, the moment the drugs had ceased, either. Some people would argue that Kaveh could not have possibly accounted for an accident in one of th specific Amurta student labs that shared a ventilation system with the Kshahrewar lecture halls. Kaveh would have argued back that he'd graduated from the Akademiya with honors and knew damn well that he should account for the most impossibly ridiculous nonsense to happen at the exact worst moment.

Arakasyapa thought he’d seen a ghost, so startled was I to see you.” Kaveh blinks, and kneels down to the Aranara–Arakasyapa?--so he’s closer to eye level. The two Aranara following their lead bobble their heads in agreement, leaves swaying gently as they do. It is so unbearably cute Kaveh isn’t entirely sure what to do with himself, but he must focus on the task at hand. “It’s alright, Arakasyapa. But right now, I think I need your help.” The Aranara all nod in unison, causing another rippling bobble of leaves, and look as solemnly as their faces allow up at Kaveh. “We know. You are trying to stop the nara who consumed Marana. You are here to save Nahida. That is why we caught the bad Nara’s ghost for you, before he slipped away.” Kaveh blinks. Blinks again. Looks up at where Siraj struggles to escape the Aranara, and blinks a third time. “His…ghost? Isn’t this a realm of dreams?” “All dreaming things have a final dream as they die. This was the promise made by the Lord of Verdure, and remains so now,” Arakasyapa says gravely, and shakes his head with an unsteady wobble. “This Nara was touched by the Marana, and we would have to plant him for a long time until his vipyaras could grow again, but you, Sunlight Nara, the Marana flees from your touch. It leaves a path that you can follow, through him.” “Marana…is what you call the Withering?” Kaveh asks carefully, the beginnings of understanding clicking into place in his mind.

“...” Kaveh looks very much like he’s debating fleeing from the kitchen, and Al-Haitham’s eyes narrow, a silent warning that Kaveh cannot outrun an insomniac undergraduate student and a woman who comes up to his armpit, and thus he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Natlan of outrunning Al-Haitham. “You have to promise not to laugh at me,” Kaveh starts, though the way his eyes stray away from Al-Haitham’s face seems to imply he’s worried about a much harsher punishment. “And–and before anything else, if you’re not comfortable with me being here during rut, I–I’ll get a hotel, I’ll find somewhere, it’s your house–” “Don’t be ridiculous. With what mora? Do not remove yourself from our home over problems you’ve imagined yourself, without even telling me what is going on.” Something in Kaveh’s face shifts at the words ‘our home’, something Al-Haitham can’t quite put a name to. But whatever it is, it is beautiful, soft and aching as he finally makes eye contact with Al-Haitham. The kitchen seems to smell of summer rain, their flowers no less present but somehow no longer discordant and overwhelming, as everything settles together. Al-Haitham can no longer discern the individual scents that make up the layers as they weave through one another, becoming one scent, singular. Ours.

He’s not sure how it is faster than Al-Haitham or Tighnari–perhaps it is the magic still wild in his body, or perhaps he’s just used to the adrenaline, the burn of fear. He doesn’t think much about it, he can’t, not with the ugly way his stomach twists and his heart and magic seem to want to claw out of his chest. It’s just as much fury as it is fear, for now. Siraj may well tip the balance, and Kaveh can’t tell in which direction until he finds him.

Unfortunately for Al-Haitham, he’s recently come into possession of a group of people willing to push past that second point, and even more unfortunately, he’s found that letting his guard down is rather pleasant, when it involves people who do not see his uniqueness as a flaw to be corrected. It is unfortunate, because with the boon of true companionship comes the truly unpleasant ordeal of being known. Maybe half a dozen people in Teyvat have learned enough about Al-Haitham to confidently say that the third fact anyone learns about him is that he is deeply, obviously, hopelessly in love with Kaveh. The reviews have come in and they agree that this should, in fact, be promoted to the most obvious thing about Al-Haitham, as though he should wear a sign around his neck that proclaims that he has been in love with his best friend since they were in school for all the world to see. (“Though really, I think anyone with eyes in their head to read wouldn’t actually need the sign,” Cyno comments over the deck he is shuffling despite the games that night having been long finished. Al-Haitham quite heroically does not pour the rest of his beer down Cyno’s chest. The beer is awful, but he paid for it, and he’ll finish it, thank you.)
