@gailsimone.bsky.social The gift shop on the U.S. side of the border is clearly targeting Canadian tourists.

@gailsimone.bsky.social The border crossing from Canada back into the U.S. is just getting weirder and weirder.

THE REASON I JUMP is a moving autobiographical book by author Naoki Higashida, who was 13y at the time. As a non-speaking child w/autism, he turned to writing to express his thoughts & imagination, explaining in part what the world looks like through his unique lens. Still sticks w/me years later.

I’m currently reading POSITIVE OBSESSION, the biography of author Octavia E. Butler (by Dr. Susana M. Morris), detailing the life & times of one of SciFi’s best and brightest writers. Butler’s work was ahead of its time, evocative, compelling, and moving.

Hard to choose one, but I’ll go with DAWN.

So that carton ended up having about 6 double-yolked eggs. 🥚

I figured the was that, but this morning I opened a fresh new carton and yoked it up anew! 🪺

I’M SEEING DOUBLE!

Yesterday I had a fun-size pack of peanut M&Ms, and there were 2 stuck together. (No pics, sadly.)

Today I ordered fried pickles from Gus’s Fried Chicken, and there was a double in there too!

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Or does it just mean there are younger hens being harvested for eggs to catch up for the scarcity earlier in the year? (Younger hens are more likely to yield double-yolks than mature hens.)

I’m going to go with both—a double conclusion!

It has been a double-yolk week, finding them three days in a row. Does this mean something good is about to happen?

I drop this meme whenever it’s relevant, as it appears to be now.

Kudos to the #AlienEarth set dec team for including a Duffy on the shelf during this blink-and-you-miss-it scene in Wendy’s bedroom! #DuffyBear

THE TWO TOWERS by J.R.R. Tolkien, as performed by Andy Serkis.

My incredible audiobook journey back to Middle Earth continues w/the middle part of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy.

It’s arguably the least of the three but thrilling nonetheless despite some of the slower moving chapters. Still genius.

Spotted in Burbank earlier this week by my spouse, who clearly knows me well.

UPDATE:

I DID leave the coffee shop … and the first thing I saw a block away was this #BillyJoel billboard. 😑

Anyway, watch that fun video!

It's interesting to note the difference between this cover and the original
Spanish language version, CADÁVER EXQUISITO.

TENDER IS THE FLESH by Agustina Bazterrica

Animals are infected so the world has embraced cannibalism as a meat alternative & the protagonist works in meat processing—which is described in gruesome detail.

This is just the sordid launching point of a horrific journey that will break your heart. 😳

Has anyone seen this person hanging about?

THE UNWORTHY by Agustina Bazterrica

The climate is devastated. Society no longer exists. One woman survives as part of an extreme religious sisterhood based on twisted hierarchies, torture, & extreme sacrifice. When a stranger arrives, memories of the life before come flooding back. 1/2

LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING by J.R.R. Tolkien

Obviously the greatest book ever written, read by the greatest actor to ever audibly interpret the work in an audiobook, Andy Serkis.

I forgot how truly wonderful a storyteller Tolkien was.

One Book to rule them all.

I just have to say that of all the amazing theaters we have here in L.A., I think the theater at Paramount Studios may look and sound the best. Always impressed with screenings here!

Just got back from screening the new MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FINAL RECKONING movie over at Paramount. It was silly, overdramatic, cheesy, & buried under a ton of exposition. Perfect summer blockbuster. No notes.

It's a super fun thrill ride w/incredible action sequences, filmed by a true auteur. Enjoy!

ONE WAY WITCH by Nnedi Okorafor

2nd in a trio of novellas from her WHO FEARS DEATH Africanfuturist universe, this is a fresh, original, & exciting re-invention of the hero journey as its compelling protagonist Najeeba learns to be a sorcerer from a place of internal strength, wisdom, & maturity.

I have no illusions that Nnedi Okorafor somehow saw my snap review and responded to it (I never tag authors), but it really has me thinking about my experience with this book and its main character.

A lot of people are excited about the new #SUPERMAN trailer, comparing it to the feels from the original Donner film.

Thus kicks off another round of Christopher “Reeve” vs. “Reeves.” Most of you get it wrong. Don’t be that person.

(It’s the first one.)
