Saussure made a turning point in linguistic theory by laying the foundation of semiotics in Course in General Linguistics. For him language is a system of arbitrary signs:
Sign= signifier/sound image + signified/concept
Meaning comes from structure –> syntagmatic order and paradigmatic association.

The media outlets dont decide what we think, but what we think and talk ABOUT. They manage to choose how we channel our daily conversations without us noticing.
Nevertheless, that sector is a business and therefore they work under other companies interests.

The spiral of silence breaks when someone speaks up with a different opinion and others see that it’s safe to do the same. When people notice they’re not alone in what they think, they feel more confident to share it too. Slowly, more voices join in, and open discussion starts to grow.

18/03 1️⃣ Ever bite your tongue because you feared your opinion wasn’t popular? That’s the Spiral of Silence. When media repeats the same dominant narrative people with opposing views stay silent, afraid of being labeled "deviant." Are we forming opinions freely, or just following what feels "safe"?

Public opinion is what many people in a society think about an issue. Some see it as shared views, others as many different opinions. Cooley (1918) said it’s shaped by interaction, and Key (1961) said it’s what governments should listen to.

Despotism can be measured by respect and power:

Lower respect → Fewer opportunities for skill development & application.
Lower power → Concentration of governance in few hands, influencing votes & decisions.
One-industry economies → Often linked to economic instability, reinforcing control.

The importance of the message can be seen from a political perspective when it is dependent on how we interact as a community with its relation with power and respect. In democratic communities information and education play a huge role in the capacity of citizens to identify "despotism".

During our classes on Tuesday we were discussing Wilbur Schramm’s communication model (1954). It is a foundational theory in communication studies.

This model is especially useful for understanding mass communication, interpersonal interaction, and digital media.

In our first lesson, we delved into the definition of communication from which we explored various interpretations and perspectives through our colleagues’ drawings. This showed us from the start that there are multiple variants of the same social phenomenon that is transmitting meaning.
