They were pinned down for an indeterminate amount of time and were likely to be killed. They'd be found eventually. The Tempad being shot meant someone would be sent to find them but without the TVA knowing why the Tempad had disconnected they'd be cautious and it would take time to prepare an extraction team. The bullets had gotten more insistent on the other side of the wall. What Mobius had first believed was a single shooter, was apparently a group. Mobius could feel the impact of the bullets on the wall behind him and he hoped the old stonework would hold up. He looked over to Loki to find that instead of hiding, Loki was standing his ground wielding magic to defend them and attack their aggressors. “Loki, get down,” Mobius hissed.

But Loki being right didn't take the sting out of the words. “Okay. Fine,” Mobius responded, trying to keep the hurt out of his voice. That caught Loki's attention though. Their head whipped around to look at Mobius, an indistinguishable expression on their face. Their mouth hung open, trying to find words that escaped them. The moment, and it was only a moment, hung on for an eternity before it ended in a spray of blood. Loki's shoulder exploded and they staggered a step forward.

The first bullet missed, lodging in the wall behind them and startling both of them. Loki spun in the direction of the shooter while Mobius pulled his Tempad out of his pocket and attempted to call for help. With hostile combatants nearby it was risky to open a Time Door without help. The second bullet put an end to Mobius’ attempt. He stared at the shattered pieces in his hands. “Move!” Loki shouted, shoving Mobius with one hand toward cover behind a stone fence several steps away. With their other hand they sent a blast of green energy in the direction of the shooting.

The dragons in the tales he'd heard were greedy and ferocious, and while Zemo could be that way when he wanted, he was also kind and thoughtful. Zemo cared very much for any creature under his protection, Mobius had learned, and that extended to him. The dragon had gone out of his way to make his cave as comfortable as possible for Mobius until the place was just as much his home as the house in the village had been. The only thing Zemo asked for in return was stories and Mobius obliged every night. He told every story he could think of, some true, others were tales he'd been told as a child. Depending on Zemo's mood, he might tell stories of action and adventure or he might tell quiet stories about his family and the memories they shared. Sometimes, if Mobius was lucky, Zemo would share stories of his own. Those were the stories Mobius valued most as they were so rare and surprising. He tucked each away until he could write them down to be remembered.

Loki slipped away into the TVA, wandering for a while to get the jittery feeling out of him. Mobius would be fine. This was going to work. He told himself this over and over until he almost believed it. His feet brought him to a place Mobius had taken him a long while back. The snacks were apparently unrivaled but it was tucked out of the way in a less used corner of the TVA so he didn't always have the time to go there. Loki picked a few snacks out and set them on the counter to pay before noticing something else sitting on the counter. It was a small toy, similar to some the children of Asgard had, except it was shaped like a bear maybe. It was crudely made and hard to tell. What really caught his attention was the necktie on it. It was positively absurd. Maybe it was the sleep deprivation but Loki added the stuffed bear to the pile of snacks and brought it home to Mobius.

WIP Wednesday with a snippet from the dragon shifter!zemo/knight!mobius fic I'm posting next weekend
Mobius checked his map one more time. The further in he got, the less detailed it was. There weren't many surviving stories about the heart of the forest. Only one thing was absolutely certain about it: a terrible beast lived within and guarded the area jealously. Mobius had never seen the creature up close and he had found no trace of them within the forest, but he had to try to find them. The map said there was supposed to be a cave nearby that the dragon dwelled in. It was just a matter of finding it. The entrance was smaller than he expected it to be, which was probably part of why Mobius passed by the cave so many times. Mobius pushed past the brush surrounding the entrance that helped to camouflage it and then stopped short. There was no telling what he would face in there and he might never return. Actually, there was a very good chance he would never return. He had to go in though. He didn't have any other choice. There was no returning home empty handed. He drew his sword and then a breath and then ventured in.

"Would you like a cookie? Or some juice?" she asked, noting the way Mobius was eyeing the cart. "Yes, please," Mobius answered. They all exited the elevator and Mobius sat down in the chairs that were well placed in all the hallways and he picked out a cookie and a juice box. "And for yourself?" the woman, who had told them she was a volunteer at the Institute, asked Loki. "No, I couldn't," Loki responded. "Nonsense, as his caregiver you should have one too," the woman insisted. Loki picked out a plain looking shortbread and the woman left them to deliver to other patients. Mobius couldn't help but smile as he nibbled on his cookie and considered how welcoming the place was compared to other buildings he'd gone to, even other hospitals and clinics. The place was considerate to the people coming through its doors, anticipating their needs. The lighting was softer, there were places to rest, and the comfort of everyone was taken into consideration. Mobius had begun his day fearful of what it would bring and was leaving the Institute a little sad that he wasn't returning, though not too sad. He was happy he visited but didn't want to return.

"So, how long have you had Lupus for?" The words rung through him as he sputtered in disbelief. He'd heard the word several times on his medical dramas, it had been a common guess by the TV doctors before they found the real reason. "Is that what I have?" Mobius exclaimed, excited and breathless. The young man's face went pale and his easy smile disappeared. A look of mortification replaced it and he excused himself quickly, closing the door softly behind him. It was silent in the room as Mobius turned the information over. Lupus? But his thoughts were soon interrupted by Loki bursting into laughter. "I haven't seen you make anyone that scared since the time you informed D-90 that he had accidentally pruned Renslayer's favourite coat," Loki wheezed.

The cave wasn't as dark as Mobius had expected it to be. Small holes in the rocks above let sunlight stream in and illuminated the way. The passage was large enough for Mobius to stand up straight, however, it was smaller than he expected for a dragon. The creature would likely have to crawl through such a tunnel to get in or out. There were sections of the walls that looked like they had been scraped that confirmed Mobius' suspicions and in those areas there was the occasional purple scale lying in the dirt. He was tempted to pick one up but he was there to do a job. Perhaps later.

The days all blurred together after that. If Mobius didn't have an appointment he would park himself on the couch to watch TV and nap throughout the day. Most of what Mobius watched were medical dramas which Loki didn't care for. The medical anomalies of the shows were already their life and he would have rather escaped from it by watching something else but Mobius insisted. He didn't tell Loki, but he was hoping he'd see something familiar in one of the episodes and finally know what was happening to him. The days he did have an appointment, he'd pull himself up and get dressed, though in softer clothes than he used to, and both of them would leave together. The doctor's office had several floors and many winding halls, so Mobius had to lean on Loki a lot. Occasionally, on his worst days, they would borrow one of the hospital wheelchairs and Loki would push him to and from his appointment.

He'd prepared himself for the sympathetic expressions. He knew there was no way around those. What he hadn't expected or prepared for was the advice everyone felt compelled to give him unprompted. He was told everything from trying yoga to eating pineapple (Casey swore the acids from the pineapple would help balance things out). Nevermind that his joints were too stiff to do any of the yoga poses or that anything more than walking down the hall put him out of breath. His friends meant well, so Mobius just nodded politely, but being told that he'd feel better if he dressed nicely and went for a walk outside, rather than stay inside in his pajamas or sweat pants felt patronizing. Worse were the coworkers who told him he was "an inspiration" for having such a cheerful disposition while facing such hardship. Mobius didn't know how to respond to those comments. He didn't feel like an inspiration; he couldn't even put his own socks on without help. He wasn't even particularly cheerful. He wasn't inspiring, he was trying to get through each day.

There was so much more he wished Loki could do for him but most of it wasn't feasible. Nor was it fair. He had to go to the office. Everyday he would need to somehow pull himself to the office and concentrate and not scratch and do his paperwork and occasionally go out into the field. He didn't think he could do the fieldwork anymore. He couldn't even keep up with his office work, he was beginning to drown in it. His brain felt fuzzy when he tried to concentrate on something, like every thought was slipping through his grasp and his memory wasn't what it used to be. Everything piled on and on and it was too much to bear. "I can't do it. I can't go in," Mobius said quietly. Loki studied Mobius' eyes, peering into them like he was searching for answers. "Okay," Loki said. "But I have to go to work. I can't just- I don't know. I just-" Mobius said, "Could you tell me it's okay? Give me permission to quit?"

He found concerts for them to go to - a string quartet, an orchestra, and one time a small rock cover band just to mess with Loki. Each time, the music filled the room, leaving Mobius filled with awe and joy. Each time he looked over at Loki, he saw the god enamoured by the melodies. He was so beautiful and Mobius stared in disbelief that such a person loved him. That such a person would stay with him even at his worst. When Loki would glance back at him, he'd look away, his face heating at being caught but a grin plastered on his face. And when the concerts were finished and Mobius was left tired and aching from excitement of it all, they'd retire back to their home where Mobius would shed the clothing that had chafed against his sensitive skin, making it Loki's turn to stare. The concerts were some of his favourite new memories with Loki, a gift he was sure Loki would cherish when he was gone. It was the hours after the concerts where they were wrapped up in each other that he loved the most though.

Mobius is sure he heard that incorrectly. He's still tired from being awoken in the middle of the night. "What?" "May I sleep here tonight?" Loki asks again, confirming that Mobius did hear him correctly. "I tried, but I just could not fall asleep. I used to think the noise from all the timelines kept me awake, but the silence here is worse. And when I thought about sleep I realized that all the last times I slept I was with you..." At the last word, Loki's gaze flicks to Mobius and then just as quickly flicks away again. In the low light of the apartment Mobius could see Loki's cheeks blush. "Do you want the bed or the couch?" Mobius asks.

Wip wednesday
There's another impatient knock at the door, more insistent than the last couple, just as Mobius opens the door. He isn't exactly sure who he expected to be knocking on his door in the middle of the night, perhaps some minute men or one of the judges. Instead, he finds Loki with their hand still raised to knock on his door, in TVA issued pajamas looking nervous and disheveled. "I-" Loki says, looking over Mobius, "I didn't want to wake you-" "Obviously you did," Mobius points out. "I just... can I come in?" Loki is already pressed in close to the doorway so Mobius sidesteps to let them in. They rosh into Mobius' apartment, but stop before they get very far, looking around at what is admittedly a pretty bare apartment. There is nothing on the walls and nothing that would indicate who lives in the apartment. Apart from the clutter of loose paper and files and the collections of dishes piled up on the counter and coffee table, there isn't much to indicate that anyone lives in the apartment. "What did you need?" Mobius asks. He stifles a yawn. "May I sleep here tonight?" Loki asks after taking a breath. Their hands are fidgeting in front of them and they don't look at Mobius, glancing around the apartment instead.

"I-" Loki starts, they take a deep breath and try again, "I came back because I was... lonely. I missed my friends." Mobius nods. Loki makes eye contact with him and leans in slightly, "I missed you, Mobius." The TVA spins around him as Mobius considers what Loki says. Their hand rests on the table just a few inches from his own. He could reach out and grasp it if he wanted to. Loki’s eyes gaze into his and their tongue darts out to lick their lips. "I missed you too," Mobius murmurs.

Loki sat with Mobius in the doctor's office. They'd been to so many doctors already and none of them had solved the problem. General practitioners, rheumatologists, dermatologists, etc. Loki found each one to be more useless than the one before. It grated on his nerves to listen to them say the same things every time. They had no answers, they wanted to do more bloodwork, continue trying the same medication. Meanwhile, it felt to Loki like he was watching Mobius deteriorate before his eyes. How much longer did Mobius have before...?
